Meet me on Monday...

Well its monday again and that can only mean its time to get to know your blogger neighbors with the Meet Me On Monday hop hosted by Java over at Never Growing Old.  It is a lot of fun so be sure to hop over and follow along.

Here are today's questions:
1. My current weather is _______?
2. What is your favorite sound?
3. What is the worst flavor of ice cream?
4. What magazine do you look for when you are stuck in the waiting room?
5. What is your favorite condiment?
-------------------------------------------------------------
1. My current weather is _______?

Overcast and damp and our temp is 43, only 3 more degrees until we hit our high today of 46.

2. What is your favorite sound?

I have a few but the first that comes to mind is a train, I love the low rumble and it makes me fall asleep almost instantly.

3. What is the worst flavor of ice cream?

For me it would be Rocky Road, too much going on, I don't care for nuts in things and the marshmallows get a wierd texture frozen.

4. What magazine do you look for when you are stuck in the waiting room?

If I forget my iPad I look for a local magazine to catch up on whats going on where I live.  We are a small community but actually have a few great publications.

5. What is your favorite condiment?

I would have to go with mayonnaise because you can do so much with it, add rosted peppers or cranberries or hoseradish for sandwich toppings, mix with mustard for dipping sauces.  Its great plain too, I love it on burgers and I dip my fries in it.  My all time favorite is the kind in Europe that comes in a tube like toothpaste, it has a super rich and creamy texture.

Have a great week everyone!

Wednesday's learn and earn...

~WORD OF THE DAY~

doughty  \DOW-tee\ ~ adjective

DEFINITION: marked by fearless resolution : valiant

EXAMPLES: When little Liza saw the neighborhood bullies picking on one of the younger boys the doughty girl marched up to them and demanded that they stop at once.

"The white bass particularly proved to be doughty hard fighters, especially when we hooked doubles -- which happened time and time again." -- From an article by Dick Martin in the Bucyrus Telegraph Forum (Ohio), August 8, 2011

DID YOU KNOW? "Doughty" is a persevering Old English word. Its earliest form was "dyhtig," but early on the vowel changed and the word became "dohtig." That was probably due to influence from a related Old English word, "dohte," meaning "had worth." By the 13th century, the spelling "doughty" had begun to appear. The expected pronunciation would be \DAW-tee\, paralleling other similarly spelled old words like "bought" and "sought." But over the centuries, the spelling was sometimes confused with that of the now obsolete word "doubty," meaning "full of doubt," and thus, so it is conjectured, we have the pronunciation we use today.

Tastefully Tuesday...

Photo from Taste of Home

Halloween is almost here and its time for fun themed food items, but what to make?  I have seen a lot of ideas for eyeball items, spiders and creepy cupcakes, but this recipe from Taste of Home was a new one to me an looks fun.

Boneyard Cookies
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
2 eggs
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 to 3 tablespoons seedless raspberry jam
16 to 18 ounces white baking chocolate, chopped

In a small bowl, combine confectioners' sugar and cornstarch. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in extract. Combine flour and salt; gradually add to sugar mixture and mix well.

Shape dough into a ball; flatten into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap; refrigerate for 30 minutes or until easy to handle.

On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 3-1/2-in. bone-shaped cookie cutter. (The best place to find this may be a pet store) Place 1 in. apart on parchment paper-lined baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 8-10 minutes or until edges begin to brown. Remove to wire racks to cool.

On the bottoms of half the cookies, spread 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon jam down the center; top with remaining cookies.

In a microwave, melt white chocolate at 70% power for 1 minute; stir. Microwave at additional 10- to 20-second intervals, stirring until smooth.

Dip each cookie in chocolate, allowing excess to drip off. Place on waxed paper; let stand until set. Yield: 34 sandwich cookies.

Wednesday's learn and earn...

~WORD OF THE DAY~

bildungsroman  \BIL-doonks-roh-mahn\  ~ noun

DEFINITION: a novel about the moral and psychological growth of the main character

EXAMPLES: While the author’s previous novel was a bildungsroman, her most recent book focuses on trials and tribulations of a family through multiple generations.

"Jonathan Safran Foer's exuberant, wildly stylized novel 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' (2005) incorporates intertextuality, meta-fiction and a young boy’s spiritual education -- what we English major folks call 'bildungsroman' -- in reconciling national trauma." -- From a review by Ryan Lattanzio in The Daily Californian, September 8, 2011

DID YOU KNOW? "Bildungsroman" is the combination of two German words: "Bildung," meaning "education," and "Roman," meaning "novel." Fittingly, a "bildungsroman" is a novel that deals with the formative years of the main character -- in particular, his or her psychological development and moral education. The bildungsroman usually ends on a positive note with the hero's foolish mistakes and painful disappointments over and a life of usefulness ahead. Goethe's late 18th-century work Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre (Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship) is often cited as the classic example of this type of novel. Though the term is primarily applied to novels, in recent years, some English speakers have begun to apply the term to films that deal with a youthful character's coming-of-age.

Meet me on Monday...

Welcome to another Meet Me On Monday hosted by Java over at Never Growing Old.  I love these Monday get togethers she hosts!!  I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

Here are today's questions:

1. The thing that scares me the most is __________?
2. Do you like nuts in your Chocolate Chip cookies?

3. If you couldn't change the channel, what tv show would drive you from the room?
4. Pulp or no pulp in your Orange Juice?
5. Who do you miss the most?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

1. The thing that scares me the most is __________?

Ignorance, it breads hate and fear and leads to people doing things they shouldn't.  Always get the facts first.  Great example; I was talking to someone about the occupy people and he told me that the during the bank we bailed out the United Bank of Switzerland and no one had paid back any of the loans.  Really?!?  This is where fact checking is good before he is laughed at in public.

2. Do you like nuts in your Chocolate Chip cookies?

Nope, I like unadulterated cookies.

3. If you couldn't change the channel, what TV show would drive you from the room?

Ohhh sadly there are sooooo many, Jersey Shores, Dance Moms, Toddlers in Tiaras, ANY of the housewives, pretty much "reality" TV in general.

4. Pulp or no pulp in your Orange Juice?

I don't drink it often but I love it either way.

5. Who do you miss the most?

That's easy, my dad.

Have a great week everyone!
