Thursday's picture perfect deal...

The picture...

This picture was taken last September in my far garden.  It is a close up of a tricolored bumble bee on one of my Artichokes that I let flower instead of harvesting.  I was curious about how the flowers would look so I let one progress well past the picking stage and was rewarded with a beautiful almost neon lavender flower that attracted quite a few of the cold weather orange belted bees as well as a few late season butterflies and evening moths.  It was well worth letting one artichoke go past its eating stage.

~WORD OF THE DAY~

tranche \TRAHNSH\  ~  noun

DEFINITION: a division or portion of a pool or whole

EXAMPLES: "The funds are doled out in tranches over time…." — From an article in The Economist, March 10, 2012

"The 1917 law … allowed $8 billion in national debt, the first tranche of an ultimate $30 billion debt to fund World War I, repayable in gold." — From an article by David Malpass in Forbes, February 27, 2012

DID YOU KNOW? In French, "tranche" means "slice." Cutting deeper into the word's etymology, we find the Old French word "trancer," meaning "to cut." The word emerged in the English language in the late 19th century to describe financial appropriations. Today, it is often used specifically of an issue of bonds that is differentiated from other issues by such factors as maturity or rate of return. Another use of the French word "tranche" is in the French phrase "une tranche de vie," meaning "a cross section of life." That phrase was coined by the dramatist Jean Jullien (1854-1919), who advocated naturalism in the theater.

Monday's memory...

Last Monday I didn't have the blog up because I was having one last minor surgery.  With luck this was my last hurdle before getting back to a more normal life, or at least one that involves seeing Dr.s on a far less frequent schedule.  The silver lining to that surgery was that it gave me something to write about today.  I am a firm believer that you have to be able to laugh at yourself, even on your "bad" days, so it is with that in mind that I tell you this story...

Fade in, fade out, fade back in....(no really, I was waking up from surgery and was fading in and out)  I was waking up slightly in a strange room with other people around me in steal sided beds, kind of like we all were in a Robin Cook novel, the lights turned low and people talking in hushed tones.  I became aware that there was something attached to my index finger, it was heavy by my groggy calculations and really needed to come off.  I lifted my hand and shook it vigorously which given my state was more like limp spaghetti dangling off a fork.  One of the hushed voices saw what I was trying to do and quietly said "no no, you need that".  I thought if it was that important I should see what it was, so I lifted my hand to my face to see.  Turns out it was a little white box with a pretty red light on it and I had only one thought pop into my head; "E.T. phone home", and I must have thought it out loud because the hushed voice at the head of my bed burst out laughing and couldn't seem to stop.  Since I adore the sound of laughter I must have drifted back to sleep because when I woke up next I was being wheeled out to recovery to sit with my husband, I still am not sure if I was deemed Okay to move to the next stage before going home or if I was kicked out for being disruptive.

I hope you are all having a fantastic Monday!

Wednesday's learn and earn...

Sorry I missed the last couple of days, I had one last procedure I had to go through for my breast cancer treatment.  Because the Dr.s found out I am Factor 5 positive (a fancy way to say I get blood clots pretty easy), I am unable to take the medication that would stop estrogen from being produced so in stead I had my ovaries removed and that should do the trick.  It kept me down for a couple of days, but I am doing much better now, so on with the show...

~WORD OF THE DAY~

recalcitrant \rih-KAL-suh-trunt\  ~ adjective

DEFINITION(s): 1: obstinately defiant of authority or restraint
2a : difficult to manage or operate b : not responsive to treatment c : resistant

EXAMPLES: Anna's doctor ordered a week of complete bed rest, but, ever recalcitrant when it comes to doctors' orders, she was up and baking a cake after two days.

"Finally, he laid down the parental law: You will go on a hike and, gosh darn it, you will enjoy yourself. So the recalcitrant 14-year-old shrugged into her sweat shirt, slipped into her flimsy … canvas sneakers (totally hiking-inappropriate) and slumped in the back seat for the drive southwest to Vacaville, Calif., and Lagoon Valley Regional Park." — From an article by Sam McManis in Tri-City Herald (Washington), June 30, 2011

DID YOU KNOW? Long before any human was dubbed "recalcitrant" in English (that first occurred, as best we know, in one of William Thackeray's works in 1843), there were stubborn mules (and horses) kicking back their heels. The ancient Romans noted as much (Pliny the Elder among them), and they had a word for it — "recalcitrare," which literally means "to kick back." (Its root "calc-," meaning "heel," is also the root of "calcaneus," the large bone of the heel in humans.) Certainly Roman citizens in Pliny's time were sometimes willful and hardheaded — as attested by various Latin words meaning "stubborn" — but it wasn’t until later that writers of Late Latin applied "recalcitrare" and its derivative adjective to humans who were stubborn as mules.

Wednesday's learn and earn...

~WORD OF THE DAY~

argot  \AHR-goh\  ~ noun

DEFINITION: an often more or less secret vocabulary and idiom peculiar to a particular group

EXAMPLES: The town's selectmen decided to hire a consultant to sort through the bureaucratic argot of the community development grant application.

"What makes the play work, though, is that the rich insider's argot spoken by Mr. Leight's characters is used not to show how much he knows, but to set the scene for a stinging tale of youthful hope and bitter disappointment, one whose implications are universal." — From a theater review by Terry Teachout in The Wall Street Journal, April 13, 2012

DID YOU KNOW? We borrowed "argot" from French in the mid-1800s, although our language already had several words covering its meaning. There was "jargon," which harks back to Anglo-French by way of Middle English (where it meant "twittering of birds"); it had been used for specialized (and often obscure or pretentious) vocabulary since the 1600s. There was also "lingo," which had been around for almost a hundred years, and which is connected to the Latin word “lingua" ("language"). English novelist and lawyer Henry Fielding used it of "court gibberish" -- what we tend to call "legalese." In fact, the suffixal ending "-ese" is a newer means of indicating arcane vocabulary. One of its very first applications at the turn of the 20th century was for "American 'golfese.'"

Monday's memory

Next weekend I am going with my sister-in-law and her family to a local minor league Baseball game.  They all seemed surprised that I liked the sport and I told them that it is one of those things that holds a wealth of wonderful of memories for me.  I had a close friend who's dad was the 3rd base coach for the Twins many years back so I had a whole summer of wonder in the 80s, then there was the Cubs game just last year with Bernie and Jen that will I will remember forever with a smile.  But all that is just icing on the cake of what was my favorite ball park experience.  I am cheating a little by sharing something I had already written back in 2009, but I realized then what a powerful thing memories are after I heard about one of the best pitchers in Baseball passing away and I felt compelled to write down my memories of a very special day.

April 14, 2009

This is how the old Met looked on the day I wrote about.
Its funny how memories can come back so fast, its like being hit with a freight train. I was watching the news last night and they ran a story that Mark Fidrych died in a freak accident at his home. I was completely stunned, everything I remembered about that warm day came back all at once. It was July 20th 1976 and I was the most special 12 year old girl on the planet because dad was taking me to see “a GREAT pitcher they called "The Bird"” I remember being a little confused because he didn’t pitch for the Twins but that was okay, if dad liked him that’s all that mattered. We parked pretty far back in the parking lot and I remember the smell of the tailgaters brats cooking and how it made my stomach growl. Inside the Met Stadium there was such a contrast in temperature that it actually gave me a shiver, but there was the promise of a hot dog. We were there early, along with everyone else it seemed, and waited our turn in the long line to get a pregame snack. Two hot dogs, a large beer for dad and a root beer for me, it seemed expensive at $2.25, almost a whole weeks allowance for me! I remember dad looking like the proverbial kid in a candy store, it seemed to take about 10 years off his age. We made our way back outside to our seats, ate our ball park meal in the shade of the bleachers and waited for the program vendor. Dad almost never bought a program, he knew the players by name and knew a lot of the stats off the top of his head, if he bought a program it was a special game indeed. We waited some more. Finally… the players were called to the field and when they called Mark Fidrych’s name the stadium erupted in cheers and stomping, I had never seen such a thing for a player on the opposing team, was everyone insane or could this guy really pitch that well? The national anthem was played and then there was an announcement….The Minnesota Twins did something they had never done before and I don’t think have done since….they released 13 pigeons to try to break ‘The Birds’ winning streak. Finally the game began, I remember watching Mark’s antics on the mound and thinking there really WERE Angels in the Outfield, that HAD to be who he was talking to, right? But whether he was talking to Angels, the ball or himself it didn’t matter, the Twins didn’t stand a chance and lost the game to Detroit 8 to 3. Now the Met Stadium is gone to make way for the Mall of America, Dad passed away quite a few years ago and one of the best pitchers in Baseball is gone. Quite the flood of memories in a short 30 second news story. Who says you loose your memory with age?

I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead.

Wednesday's Learn and Earn...

~WORD OF THE DAY~

maffick \MAF-ik\  ~  verb

DEFINITION: to celebrate with boisterous rejoicing and hilarious behavior

EXAMPLES :Fans mafficked for hours outside the stadium, celebrating the team's dramatic victory in the division championship.

"In half an hour, after the mildest of mafficking, the last visitors of the exhibition's last day had gone out of the gates and the staff began their final acts of closing up shop." — From an article in The Guardian (London), October 1, 2011

DID YOU KNOW? "Maffick" is an alteration of Mafeking Night, the British celebration of the lifting of the siege of a British military outpost during the South African War at the town of Mafikeng (also spelled Mafeking) on May 17, 1900. The South African War was fought between the British and the Afrikaners, who were Dutch and Huguenot settlers originally called Boers, over the right to govern frontier territories. Though the war did not end until 1902, the lifting of the siege of Mafikeng was a significant victory for the British because they held out against a larger Afrikaner force for 217 days until reinforcements could arrive. The rejoicing in British cities on news of the rescue produced "maffick," a word that was popular for a while, especially in journalistic writing, but is now relatively uncommon.
