Thursday's picture perfect deal...

The picture...

Last month I went to the Renaissance Festival with some friends and got some really fun pictures.  This one of Captain Jack Sparrow in a nail biting conversation with a Black Pearl crew member was one of my favorites.

The deal...

This one is an awesome!  Get the new SodaStream Genesis for only $65.00 using a coupon code and rebate combo.  Just go to Kohl's website and add the SodaStream to your cart.  Then when you check out use coupon code SPIDERWEB and the price will drop from the original $139.99 to $79.99 with a $5.00 for shipping.  With your purchase you will get $10 in Kohl's Cash to use on any future purchase (maybe some extra soda flavors). Then fill out the rebate form and mail it in with all the requirements for the proof of purchase for another $10 cash back. You get the soda maker, 2 carbonating bottles, and 12 pack of flavor samples with this set, plus you get your choice of black or red.  As a little added savings, if you shop through QuickRewards you will get 3.2% cash back on your Kohl's purchase.  We have a SodaStream and it has actually already paid for itself pretty quickly.  With the holidays coming up this would make a great gift as well. The cartridges can be exchanged for full ones so you will never have to buy another one and I have been using Monin and Torani syrups (ordered from Amazon using my prime membership) for all sorts of unique soda flavors, so far our favorites are cantaloupe and blackberry.

**This great offer was from Brads Deals, if you are not a member it is worth checking into,  I have gotten a lot of great deals from this site!

Have a wonderful Thursday!

No money Monday...

Java over at Never Growing old is going to revamp her blog, which may or may not include a Meet me on Monday post (I have my fingers crossed it does, those are so fun!)  But in the mean time I thought I would share one of my New Year's resolutions with you, its "no money Monday's" and the goal is to spend as little and preferably no money on Monday's.  We are including things like keeping the gas stoves turned off, heat turned down, eating left overs.  The great by-product is its also a great way to encourage house cleaning on Mondays!  I also spend time at my email reading my paid to read emails and taking surveys, its a great way to earn a little pocket change, but it tend to save it all up for something big, like a trip with my girl friends.

Did you make a resolution this year?  I would love to hear about it and if you are keeping it.  My other resolution is the same this year as it is every year, exercise more, which I am actually pretty hit or miss with depending on what I have going on that day, and yup, exercise fits in great with the "no money Monday" program.

Have a great start to the week!

Sunday's media madness...

Just before the new year I was reading one of the many blogs I follow and came across a wonderful book review by Caren Gittleman from Cat Chat with Caren and Cody (a blog I highly recommend checking out).  The book was one that I loved and wanted to share because it has great information on saving money while being a pet owner, but since I am no where near as good a writer as Caren, I am going to let her tell you in her own words; this is a repost of her original post, used with permission of course.  Thank you again Caren and Cody!

Book Review: Pampered Pets On A Budget: Written By: Jeffrey L. Barnes And Kristen M. Levine

I was excited when I was contacted a few weeks back asking if I would like to receive a copy of Pampered Pets On A Budget by Jeffrey L. Barnes And Kristen M. Levine to read and review.

My pets, like everyone else's are pampered and since I am virtually unemployed and my husband has recently retired, the idea that I could read about how to pamper my pet and receive ideas/suggestions about how to do so AND maintain a budget had my ears perked and my tail on alert!

These are tough times in which we live. Every day people are losing jobs and struggling to make ends meet, while the prices of groceries, medical care, etc. continue to rise. Sadly, when a family experiences a financial blow one of the first casualties is often the family pet.

As pet lovers we can never have too many tools in our tool belt to help us not only care for our pets but to maintain a budget while doing so and this book sets out to do what it promises, and that is to:

"help pet parents uncover new ways to save on the products and services you need to take great care of your pets, without compromising your pet's health and wellness care or severely damaging your pocketbook."

This book is short (74 pages) but don't let that fool you. It is 74 pages that are jam-packed with must-have information for today's pet owner.

Take a look at some of the chapters:

Chapter 3-The Internet is not Always Right: this chapter was written by Jeffrey Barnes and is one of my personal favorites. We have all fallen victim to running to the internet when our animal is ill. It can be anything from a Google search to posting a problem on Facebook and receiving 500 differing opinions. Many of those opinions include horror stories that when you are already stressed and worried, are the LAST things that you need to hear.

This chapter explains: How the internet is NOT a substitute for your veterinarian, your veterinarian knows YOU and your pet!
  • It reinforces how when you are reading ANY information from the internet you need to look at the qualifications, licensing and formal education of the source providing that information!
  • It mentions how drug and vaccine manufacturers stand behind their products ONLY when they have been purchased directly from your veterinarian.
Other great chapters in this 10 chapter book are:

Chapter 4-Trusted Online Pet Resources- in this chapter Kristen Levine points out that there is some online information that can be trusted but that it should NEVER take the place of human professionals when it comes to your beloved pet.

This chapter talks about: General pet information and adoption sites such as petfinder.com and catster.com It also mentions reputable Veterinary and Health Sites such as VeterinaryPartner.com

Chapter 5-The Value of Your Veterinarian: as explained by Jeffrey Barnes one of my favorite points made in this chapter is "your veterinarian is your pet's medical health care captain and is the only authority on medical issues."

Chapter 7-Pet Health Insurance is discussed by Kristen Levine and is relevant to me because I am still pondering the issue as to whether or not to purchase pet insurance for Cody and Dakota. Some points that Kristen mentions that are important to consider are:

Consider Premiums, Co-Pays and Deductibles
Pick Coverage, Not Cost

This book contains so much information and delivers it in an interesting, straight-forward, concise and reader-friendly style.

I loved that at the end of each chapter there is a page called Chapter Highlights which is a summation of information listed in an easy to refer to bulleted format.

Pampered Pets On A Budget will be your newest, invaluable resource to help you "properly position yourself to give your pet the best lifestyle possible."

I received no compensation for this review. I received a copy of the book to read/review.

I hope you are having a great Sunday!

Saving green while being green...

Going green is the currently the “in” thing to do, its cool, its fashionable. For me its nothing new, growing up I was the teen pushing everyone I knew to recycle. I was considered the tree hugging kid on the block, turns out I was just ahead of my time. Now I’m older and I have discovered more ways to help the environment. Of course being the practical sort I have found economic ways of being green as well.

One of the best ways starts with the food we eat, if you have access to a farmers market you can get some of the best quality food while supporting your community of local growers, many of whom are also organic which means no pesticides in the air or ground water. Better still, if you are patient you can start your own garden and have a wonderful payoff at the end of the growing season. There is a fantastic charitable organization called The Dinner Garden that supplies seeds, gardening supplies, and gardening advice free of charge to all people in the US, if you have too many seeds they would be more than willing to redistribute them to people in need, also consider sending them the seeds your garden produces at the end of the year. If you need seeds yourself just let them know and they will get them out to you, you can find them at: The Dinner Garden.

Change the light bulbs in your home, I know you probably have heard it before but ENERGY STAR® Qualified Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs and indoor or outdoor hardwired light fixtures can last up to 10 times as long as regular light bulbs, use up to 75% less energy and save you up to $65 in energy costs. That’s $65 to do something fun with! Switching your appliances to energy star ratings saves a lot over the course of a year as well, check the yellow sticker when you purchasing an appliance and it will tell you how efficient it will be per year.

Beyond changing a light bulb or getting a new dish washer the government offers tax credits for consumers who purchase and install specific products, such as energy-efficient windows, insulation, doors, roofs, and heating and cooling equipment in existing homes; this credit is up to 30% of the cost, up to $1,500, for certain improvements "placed in service" in 2011. You can get all the specifics at EnergyStar for the project you are planning.

Bring your own bags to the grocery store, there are a lot of them now that are offering discounts if you have your own bag. One thing to remember though is to make sure you have a bag designated JUST for meats and poultry. I usually use a plastic bag from the grocery store and re-use at home to empty the cats litter box, then I know its not going to get used again and cause a potential problem. If you don’t want to wash the bags after each trip to the grocery store then it’s a good idea to at least spray the inside of the bags between uses lightly with something like Lysol just to make sure there is no cross contamination with other raw foods you may be eating. Let the bags air out after you use them and don’t use them for anything other then groceries. Here is a cool way to give an old T-shirt a second life by turning it into a shopping bag: T-shirt shopping-bag If you get enough of these you will never need to buy a store bag again!

Paying too much for your city water bill? Consider putting in a rain Barrel or two. What you pay for the barrels you will get back in what you pay the water company in the summer. In a year with average rain fall you should be able to water your garden as well as your lawn. Sam’s Club has a 200 gallon green collapsible rain barrel available for only $108.18 with free shipping at: Sam's club rain barrel.

Love reading a magazine every week or month? That subscription costs cash and even recycled its hard on the planet. Check out the free eZines available on line, one of the best that fits right in with the cause can be found at: Living Green Magazine. It is full of helpful and sometimes surprising information as well as ideas of things you can do to help the environment.

And finally, if you are considering buying a green product but don’t know how well it performs or if you will get your money‘s worth, try this site, its considered the consumers guide to the green revolution and should have useful information on almost anything your considering: The Daily Green.

Hope you are all having a great week!!

Warranted Savings...

Well my laptop is at Best Buy again, it's the 6th time, now they have requested a buy back which means that my extended warranty will pay me back the amount I purchased the computer for when I got it new.  So this brought up the question "When is it good to buy an extended warranty?"  My general rule of thumb us that the price of the coverage should be less than 25% of what the product costs in the first place and the coverage should be at least 3 years for that amount.  Even with that in mind they can be pricey and if you shop at places like Best Buy they will even try to sell it to you when you buy a wall phone that only costs $20.00.  Now truth be told I almost never use the extended warranties before they expire, in some respects that's good and in others it shows I have wasted my money, which means all I have gotten for my investment is a delayed case of buyers remorse.   The other thing to do is read the fine print!  With the Best Buy warranty they can't even suggest a buy back until the device had been sent out three times to be repaired, so they dosen't include the times that it spent in the store being looked at, or any of the parts I was told to buy to fix my problem. It also has to be sent in for the same thing and that's where you need to make sure they word it correctly, I brought the lap top in at one point for the flickering picture (the major and repeat problem) and a loose USB port, well they looked at the screen and couldn't get it to do what it was doing but did replace the USB, and THAT is what they put on the repair ticket so it didn't count.  Please don't think that this is a post against Best Buy, all the service folks there have been wonderful and they are just working with in the confines of the warranty provided by the company Best Buy uses.

After navigating the ins and outs of my own warranty issues I decided to do some checking to see what was available out there.  I found a company called Square Trade that sells extended warranties for much less than you can get them at the store usually, and the best part?  You can get a warranty that will cover used and refurbished items and even items purchased on eBay.  My example uses a Dell - Inspiron Laptop / Intel® Core™ i3 Processor / 14" Display / 4GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive - Tomato Red that has a retail cost of $599.99 at Best Buy.  The cost for the extended warranty with the store is $129.99 for the 2 year coverage that doesn't cover accidents, with Square Trade the cost is $99.99 for 3 years, so I pay less and add a year of coverage.  The up side of having the coverage through Best Buy is after a point the product would be considered a lemon and you would receive your money back, I didn't see this as an option with Square Trade.

The other thing to look at is which credit card you use to make a purchase.  Now days most of the major credit cards offer an extended warranty when you use their card.  Because each card and level of credit offers their own different protections its best to call and ask a customer service representative what is covered, the number should be on the back of your card.

I hope everyone is having a beautiful weekend!

Hotel happiness...

I am just heading home today from a trip to Minneapolis with a friend who needed some medical tests.  I am an old fashioned gal at heart, I went to the hotel web site and checked the rate then called to see if they offer a discount for folks going to the University for medical reasons.  Indeed they do have a special rate for that and it saved us $45 per night on out rooms.  When I was done booking the rooms I decided to check Hotels.com and Expedia just to see what they said and I was able to get the same rate through them but not on the club floor.  Whats the big deal with that you may wonder?  Well here is the difference, by me calling and asking for that rate the woman in reservations signed me up for the Gold Rewards Program automatically, no additional paper work for me, I got free valet parking for my car, a $6.00 gift card for each night we were in the room to Starbucks (which are good at any Starbucks, not just the hotels branch) and $10.00 each night we were in the room to the hotels lounge.  So in addition to the amount saved on the room we got money to spend in the hotel.  In all, with two rooms for two nights we saved $180 on the rooms, plus got $64 to spend on food and beverages.  I think that was worth the call for sure and just proves that sometimes the best way to hunt for a deal is to not hunt too hard.

The other problem with some of the online hotel booking sites is that some chains, like the Kimpton's, have the same rate no matter where you go, which means that booking directly through the hotel site is the best bet because you can request things that the hotel may offer for free.  In the case of Kimptons the have "tall" rooms, which means a longer bed and higher shower heads, something my husband loves, these can't be requested using another site.  The other problem I ran into was checking on Hotwire; you don't actually get to see what hotel you will be staying at until AFTER you book the room.  This is not for me, I like being able to see a picture of the room because if I have to spend a week in a overly modern space it makes me a little nuts.

The moral here is that it pays to do a little homework but I would suggest calling the hotel directly and ask if they can meet the rate you found on line and what comes with your room.  Some hotels will even sign you up for their rewards programs which will entitle you to a free upgrade or other amenities.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Old fashioned holiday saving...

Have you tallied up your Black Friday sales purchases yet? Planning on shopping on the highest grossing day for retailers, Cyber Monday?  What about a budget?  If your like most shoppers this time of year its easy to get carried away in the frenzy of deals and overspend.  With the recession a lot of consumers have changed strategies and started using only cash, that way when its gone you stop spending and don't end up with that dreaded January bill from your credit card company.  A great way to have some extra cash for the holidays is the Christmas Club, a tried and true method of saving that was devised during the Great Depression and is seeing a resurgence of use.  Its simple, you put away a little bit of money every month starting in January and in October or November you can take it out for your holiday needs.  If you save as little as $10.00 a week starting in January and go through October you would have $420 at the start of November.  You can earn interest compounded on many of these types of accounts as well because you are not allowed to withdraw your funds until a specific date for the holidays, its kind of like a mini CD.  Some Banks and Credit Unions offer these accounts (be sure to ask since its usually not advertiesed), but if not you can also consider short term CDs that will offer a higher yield than your general savings account will, the down side is that you may need a higher amount down to open an account for a CD than a Christmas Club account.

If you run into a problem finding a bank that offers a Christmas Club, or the CDs terms are too high consider opening an account with a group by pooling your money together. If you require that two signatures are needed to withdraw any funds it would cut down the temptation to take anything out early. Its also fun at the end of the term to get together with that group of family or friends to get your cash, have a little lunch, get caught up and then shop together to kick off the holiday season with a smile.

Another option that is super easy is simply saving all your ones over the year and then bundling them in groups of $100.00.  This is something that my husband and I do at usually at the end of the year we have between $500.00 and $600.00 for shopping or a vacation.  Its fun to watch the cash grow and the bank will convert it to larger bills for free when we are ready.  You don't earn interest but because its so easy we both do it every time we shop with cash.  My husband laughs because I don't call them One's any more, I call them "Fun's".

I hope you all have a relaxing Saturday!

Grandmother's cost effective cleaning...

I remember visiting my grandmother a lot when I was younger and she had such a small house that I loved to pretend it was mine to take care of, kind of like a small princess castle, I especially loved to dust and vacuum with her big pink upright, much to my grandmothers delight I'm sure.  I remember my grandmothers cleaning cupboard quite vividly as well, it housed 7 things, a BIG glass jug of vinegar, several boxes of Baking Soda, salt, dish soap, steal wool pads, a dusting cloth and a glass bottle of camphor oil.  From those seven things came one of the cleanest houses I have ever known. I think she had the right idea, keep it simple and inexpensive, I look at all the things on the market nowadays that do exactly what grandma did with much less and wonder why folks spend so much on this stuff every year.

In our own home I haven't bought a bottle of glass cleaner in years, I use grandma's recipe of equal parts vinegar and warm water wiped off with newspaper to wash all our windows and leave no streaks.  Grandma used to use it to clean the oven window off as well, she just put it on a cloth right from the jug and wiped down the window, worked like a charm.  One of my other favorite uses for vinegar is to clean my flower vases, I love to bring in fresh flowers from the garden but most of the time I end up with a white ring in the vase and if its a bud vase this is hard to clean out.  I just pour in some vinegar, let it sit then use a bottle brush and its gone.  Vinegar is definitely one of those underutilized tools and you can check out 1001 tips for using vinegar at the vinegar website, many of the ideas shown I have used at one point or another, and some of them may surprise you, I know I found some things I didn't know, like vinegar can be used to discourage ants and get rid of fruit flies. There is a printable a coupon for $0.50 off Heinz Vinegar just for entering your name, email address and checking a few boxes at the Heinz Vinegar web site.

My Grandmother was using baking soda in her refrigerator long before I understood it wasn't there to use in her cooking, it was there to keep her food fresh, but she had other tricks up her sleeve for this versatile product as well.  When she cleaned the kitchen at the end of the day she would wipe the counters with her damp dish cloth, the lightly sprinkle baking soda on them and let it sit while she put the dishes away, then she would use the damp cloth to wipe it up, it left the kitchen smelling like new and it cleaned up any grease or stains on the counter.  Way before there was any type of sprinkle in carpet deodorizer grandma and I would have fun dancing through her little living room sprinkling the carpet with baking soda before I vacuumed, it worked great and left everything smelling so fresh.  When the box was empty she would cut it open and set it in the bottom of her little garbage can between the can and the bag, that way the area under the kitchen sink where she kept the garbage would have any unpleasant odors held in check.  Even though this was long before  the days recycling she used every part of everything and nothing went to waste.  For some easy ideas for cleaning and keeping your house smelling fresh check out The New Homemaker blog.  I also found a coupon for $0.50 off two of either the 2# or 4# boxes of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda, just click on the special offers on the side and  enter your name and email address.

Grandma usually used the salt when she needed a harder abrasive than the baking soda, like for really icky frying pans or stuff that was caked onto her oven wear, I also remember her putting her dish sponges in salt water overnight about every other day to keep them fresh.  She kept some downstairs as well by her washing machine, I wasn't allowed to help with the laundry because she was always afraid I would run my hand through the mangle, then she would have to explain that to my mother.  For more on the everyday and not so everyday uses of salt be sure to check out the Belly Bytes web page.  The Morton Salt site also has ideas for the uses of salt as well as offering coupons on occasion.

You know what the dish soap, steal wool and dusting cloth are for, but not everyone knows about the magic of camphor oil.  That one bottle was used over the years whenever there was a white ring left on a wood table, just a little dab on a cotton cloth rubbed with the grain of the wood right over the ring and it would disappear like magic.  For a while it was hard to find Camphor oil because of FDA restrictions on the product, but now you can find it again with relative ease.  Don't be tempted to buy the largest bottle you can find though, that little bottle the size of my hand was passed down from my grandmother to my mom and finally to me.  The lowest price I found for a two ounce bottle was at NOW Foods for $2.49.

The basic message is back to basics will save you quite a lot of cash.  Why spend $2.50 - $3.00 for a carpet deodorizer when a box of baking soda will do the trick for around a buck?  Do you have any cleaning tips or tricks from by gone eras?  I would love to hear about them.

Have a great weekend!

Banking on your savings...

You may have noticed that as interest rates have dropped the fees that banks charge has gone up, and free checking is now a thing of the past.  Its important now to be up to date on the fees your bank is charging and some of the ways you may be able to avoid getting nickled and dimed to death.

For today lets just stick with the basic checking account, things that used to be free in the not to distant past included no minimum balance, interest on your balance, a paper statement, free ATM usage and free checks.  Starting this summer with the new fees all that's going to chance.  I am going to compare the two largest banks in our area, US Bank and Wells Fargo.  First lets look at what has happened to your $100 checking account balance with US Bank Regular checking account (these fees are varied by state):

Opening balance = $100.00

$12.00 monthly maintenance fee which you can avoid only if your account stays above $750.00
$3 each statement cycle to return canceled checks with your statement

Just these two fees alone mean that if you left your $100 in the bank for just a little over 6 month you would have a zero balance.

Now lets assume you actually use your account, if you need to reorder any checks their site doesn't offer any free ones and the cost varies depending on what type of checks you need, but no need to worry if you run out before they get to you, US Bank will give you 6 checks and 2 deposits slips for $3.00.  There is no fee for using a US Bank ATM but if you stray out of their network the fee will be $2.00 for each transaction, if you do this outside the US the fee rises to $5.00 per transaction. The fee to stop payment on a check has increased to a whopping $30.00, making it a better deal to let  $20.00 check clear for the item you never received off of eBay (this is a scam artists dream).  Oh and one more little thing, just because its your money don't assume you can have it whenever you want it, there is an Excess Withdrawal fee of $3.00 for each withdrawal/transfer during the statement cycle above the three. This fee applies to withdrawals and transfers at ATMs, teller lines, by telephone or by any other electronic means.  Have a nice day....

On to Wells Fargo:

Opening balance $100.00

$5.00 monthly maintenance fee which you can avoid only if you maintain a $1,500 average daily
There is no fee for getting a monthly statement mailed to you if you do not need copies of the checks, if you would like copies of your checks front and back then it is $1.00 per month for the classic 10 per page.

Again lets assume you don't forget about your account and want to actually use it, as with US Bank you can reorder checks but the fee varies by type of check and account that you have, again, if you forget to order early Wells Fargo will provide you with temporary check, just at a little bit more cost than US Bank, you get a sheet of 3 blank checks for $3.00 and no deposit slips.  Currently there appears to be no fees to use a Wells Fargo ATM, but again if you use another network your looking at an average fee of  $2.50 in the US and $5.00 internationally.  I was unable to find the current fee for a stop payment on a check, but back in 2005 it was $29.00, my guess it the price hasn't gone down.

In general Wells Fargo is a little bit better on price than US Bank, but fees aside I do not personally bank with either one of these banks.  As a general rule I have found much better customer service and lower fees with either a local bank or a Credit Union.  I believe one of the reasons is just plain size, with any bank as big as these two customers just become a statistic and on an individual scale matter much less.  They are more apt to look at what is best for the bank and will make them money. Case and point, a federal judge just ordered Wells Fargo to pay California customers $203 million in restitution for claims that it had manipulated transactions to maximize the overdraft fees it charged.  Instead of putting the transactions through in the order they received them they were putting them through with the largest denominations first because if it put someones account in overdrawn status then they could charge per check any other amounts that went through.  Very lucrative for the bank since they received $1.8 billion in overdraft fees in just the state of California.  You can see the whole article in the New York Times.

The bottom line is to make sure you read all those little pieces of paper that come to you from the bank, whether they are in your statement or mail separately or sent via email, they all have information that may potentially affect your nest egg.  If its time to start looking for a new bank or credit union take a peek at the web site Find a Better Bank, you can put in the information for your area and what you are specifically looking for and that will get you headed in the right direction.

Hope you are all having a great start to the long weekend!

Savings by phone...

Rethinking your cell phone plan is almost as bad as shopping for new jeans. You know the ones you have are comfortable and do the job, but on the other hand you also know there is something better out there if you take a little time. A couple of years ago I was comfortable with our shared minutes plan between my husband and I, we got 150 minutes a month to use between us for $76.00 after all the taxes. Sounds wonderful but we never even came close to using that many minutes, we were lucky if we used the phones at all. I called the carrier and found out that this was their lowest plan but I was locked in for 2 more years and if I canceled it would cost $100 per phone. That didn't seem fair but I sat down and did some math. Best Buy had phones we liked for $25.00 each and a 100 minute prepaid card for each of them was $75.00. The price to cancel and start over was a total of $550.00, the cost to stay with our old carrier would have been $1,824.00. By switching and paying the penalty we saved over $1,200.00 for the next two years.

Here is the math:

Best Buy phone = $25.00 x 2 = $50.00
100 prepaid minutes = $75.00 x 2 = $150.00 x 2 years = $300.00
$100.00 fee per phone to drop old carrier = $200.00
Total for the next two years with Best Buys plan = $50.00 + $300 + $200 = $550.00

Old carrier fee $76.00 x 24 months left = $1,824.00

I am not saying that a prepaid works for everyone, but maybe it is time to check your current carrier. Do you have a lot of minutes left over at the end of the month? Even if they roll over you will probably never use them all, think if it this way, if you roll over 10 minutes every month from your plan at the end of the year you will have 120 minutes, that may sound good but are you really going to ever use them? The phone company is banking on the fact your not, they get paid and you get to keep your minutes, it looks great....on paper. Worse yet, do you lose any unused minutes at the end of the month, a company that charges for the minutes but doesn't roll them over is hoping that at some point you will need a little more that what you paid for due to some family emergency or vacation you need to call home from, then they will charge you 3 times the standard rate. Its easy to check for plans that are in you budget with Bill Shrink, its quick and easy and could save you a lot of cash. You will need your usage information, it can usually be found on your bill.
The second thing is to check your bill for features you may be getting charged for that you never use. Your phone may be equipped with a GPS navigation system, but do you use it? That can cost up to $10.00 per month on your plan. Another charge may be for Internet usage, if you don't access the Internet from the road you may be paying for something you don't need or use. Some of the phone carriers allow you to turn on features as you need them, if you need the Internet or GPS for a vacation then see what the charge is for one month and set up a reminder to call to have it turned off when you are back home.

Another thing to check is the cost of the phone itself. Technology changes so fast now days that its hard to stay on top of it, I have opted to keep my phone simple and bought myself an iPod Touch separate from the phone. That way all my hard work and apps will stay in one place if I ever decide to upgrade my phone because it's outdated, I also don't have to pay "extra" for the technology embedded in the phone. Its important to remember that a "Budget" phone can still be a nice phone, almost all have messaging, voice mail, camera, Internet and texting. You can even go "green" with some of the new phones. The MOTO W233 Renew green phone from T-Mobile is unique because of its eco-friendly construction, the Samsung Reclaim green cell phones handset is made up of 80 percent recyclable materials and is designed with organic components and packaging. Please also recycle your old cell phone when you purchase a new one, many battered woman's shelters will take them, or you can request a prepaid envelope from the Cell Phones for Soldiers program, plus many many more programs that use phones for the elderly, victims of natural disasters etc. check for options with phones4charity.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Prevention for pennies...

Not too long ago I had my email hacked into and it sent out a virus to a lot of folks in my address book, luckily I was able to get the problem corrected and no one got a virus from the malicious attack, but it did drive home the point of being safe no matter what you do. McAfee is running specials on their 2010 anti virus software of 50% off until January 31st. They have different software bundles depending on your computer usage. You can check out all the coupons for McAfee at WOW coupons.

I am a member of Life Lock and love the peace of mind and security it brings, I used to be an insurance agent and we had a few clients who had their identities stolen and I can not begin to tell you what a nightmare it was for them! Life Lock is offering a 30 day free trial and a 10% discount. This is one program I highly recommend because it can save you a ton of money and a lot of heart ache if you ever need their services.

Not a lot of folks still write checks at stores but they are still handy for paying the bills. A common check scam is something called check washing. The thief gets a hold of your checks, usually in the out going mail, and soaks them in a solution that literally washes off your writing. They keep your signature on the check then write in what ever they want for the rest. Right now Uni-ball is giving away free pens that are designed to prevent check fraud. You have to be over 18 and live in the lower 48 states. They are giving away 10,000 pens each day on a first come first served basis starting at noon Central time. This promo is set to go through April 30th.

Once the bills are paid remember to shred any papers with your personal information that your not going to need for your taxes. Office Max offers a shredding service that is available in their stores and is priced per pound, this is great if you have a bunch of stuff that you need to get rid of now, if you don't already own a shredder you can find one at Staples that will cross cut up to 8 sheets, regularly $49.99 but right now there is a $20.00 rebate, bringing the final cost to $29.99.

Do you have a home office? Does the door lock? You would be amazed at how many people answer no to having a lock on an office in their home. If your house should ever get broken into the last thing a bugler wants is to spend MORE time getting an interior door open. A good quality lock will be a deterrent to a thief and stop any snooping by children, maintenance workers or acquaintances. Home Depot is having a sale on all their door hardware right now and if you order on line they have free shipping on orders over $49.00.

These are all easy things you can do yourself that will help keep you and your family safe. Have a wonderful week everyone.

Sitdown meal deals...

Ok, we covered the fast food options available, time for the sit down options for when you have a little more time. One of the easiest ways I can think of for sit down meal savings is with gift cards. You can purchase them at a discount at a variety of places and if you find a coupon to use at the restaurant you can save even more. Here are some site that have cards with examples of the savings:

Plastic Jungle has Applebees cards at up to 11% off face value.

Ebay has a whole category dedicated to Gift certificates, narrow your search to restaurants and you can find some good deals, a Ruth Chris $100 card just sold for $90.01 with free shipping, that's 10% off. Make sure to watch the shipping charges at eBay though, they can be very high with some sellers.

Gift Cards Again has a $100.00 Outback Steak House card available for $91.00, a 9% savings.

ABC Gift Cards currently has Baja Fresh certificates for 10% off and Planet Hollywood certificates for 12& off and free shipping on all orders.

Of course there is always the popular Restaurant.com where you can find discount certificates for pennies on the dollar. These are an awesome value. They have a promotion going until 1/12/10 11:59pm, if you enter coupon code CHOW you will get an additional 50% off.

There are a lot of printable coupons available now for area restaurants;

Boston Market has $3.00 off when you sign up for their email news letter.

California Kitchen is offering a free kids meal on their birthday month just for registering with them.

Chili's has a coupon for a free chips and queso when you join their email list.

Chuck E. Cheese's has a few coupons available through February 3rd for those nights out with the kids, deals include 1 large pizza, 4 soft drinks and 25 game tokens for $18.99 and buy 60 tokens get 40 free.

Godfathers Pizza has 5 current coupons including one for a buy one get one medium pizza.

The Melting Pot will give you a free chocolate fondue for joining their mailing list (This would be great for valentines day!!)

Be sure to check all your local papers as well, they usually have some great deals as well. Have a great start to the week everyone.

Its that time of year again....

Happy New Year to everyone!! Its time for your new years resolution again. Most people give up their resolutions by March so keep your goals in the realm of something you can accomplish, don't set out to take on the world.

The top goals for new years for most people are to stop smoking, loose weight, get more organized and reconnect with old friends. Maybe these little gems will help you stay on track......at least until April.

If your going to quit smoking that's wonderful!! It can be hard but the savings are tremendous, I not only saved on what I spent for cigarettes when I quit 2 years ago, but also saved about 1/2 of my health insurance premium as well, the there were also less trips to the Dr. for bronchial related problems. I have saved an estimate of $4350.70 in just 2 years, that's a vacation!! I quit using Chantex that my Dr. prescribed, if this is something you would like to try there's a $30 coupon to bring to the pharmacist on the lower section of their web page. If you would like to try without a trip to your Doctor then give Nicorette a try, they have a $5.00 coupon available as well as information about their quit rewards. There is also the Nicoderm CQ patch, they have a $7.00 coupon as well as a free sample available by mail on the front page of their web site and they also have a rewards program.

If you want to start loosing weight for 2010 there are some places that are offering discounts for their programs, such as Weight Watchers, who are waiving their registration fee through March (the offer is near the bottom of the page), Nutrisystem, which will give you two weeks free when you sign up and Jenny Craig, who is running a special of loose 20 pounds for $20 plus food. Of course to be true to myself I am including the totally free site of Diet.com where you can find great recipes and information as well as exercise information, all without the cost of the name brand plans.

Looking to get organized in the new year? Two of the best tools for organization is a good set of shelves and a garbage can. If your cleaning out your attic, basement or store room and find something you haven't used in two years set it aside to give to a friend or donate, if its not in good shape throw it away. I have a ton of things I put in the store room vowing to repair then never do, they take up way too much valuable space so I try to throw them away or fix them immediately when I find them in there. Right now The Container Store is having their annual sale, 30% off all their Elfa shelf systems for you closets and storage areas, there is also a coupon code of WR4809 that will save you 20% off any non sale items.

Have you lost contact with your friend from high school or college and want to reconnect? Why not make it really mean something special by doing it with a beautiful card. Now days it can be so easy to send an email or make a phone call or even a text; but its so much more personal to send a card with a note from your heart. You can find some amazing cards and stationary at Lemon Tree Cards, Shelley has every card you can think of and if she doesn't, she will make it for you. If you need a return address stamp or just a stamp to make your envelopes stand out in the bunch, you can contact Bernie at The US Rubber Stamp Shop and she will get you what your looking for, if you are looking for something that you can't find on the site be sure to call the shop.

Hope this gets everyone on the right path for your new years resolution. Thanks for your readership in 2009, be sure to spread the word in 2010.

The art of giving and getting....

Tis the season for hustle and bustle, but it doesn't have to be stressful and expensive. If you have folks that are hard to shop for one of the best things to give are gift cards. They fit perfectly in a card, no gift wrap required. The best part is that there are a lot of places this year offering gift cards free with a purchase of either merchandise or other gift cards. That means that if its a store you like you can keep the bonus for yourself or you can send the windfall on as a gift to someone else and make your dollar go even further.

If you live by a CVS Pharmacy, they currently have a promotion going, for every $25 worth of gift card by Email (eGift Card) purchased, the purchaser receives a $5 eGift Card, they will send you just one gift card based on your total purchase, so if you spend $25.00 you will get a $5.00 E-card, and if you spend $150.00 on gift cards you will get a $30.00 E-card.

Best Buy is currently running a promotion on their DVDs, if you buy 5 DVDs totaling at least $50.00 from their extensive list they will give you a $25.00 gift card.

Got an outdoor person on your list? L.L. Bean is offering a free $10.00 gift card with a purchase of $25.00 or more, note here that you will not get more for spending more so your best bet is to stick to the $25.00. The $10.00 gift certificate is only good until February 16,2010.

Applebees is offering a $10.00 bonus card when you spend $50.00 on gift cards, but you can not buy them on line, you need to go into the store.

If you live in the Duluth area our local Black Woods / Black Water restaurants are offering a deal if you are a member of their diner club. Buy a $100 gift certificate and they will give you an additional $25.00 gift certificate. You can mix and match these which is really nice. I got the 1st card to Black Woods because I know we love it and we go quite a bit with my niece, and I got the $25.00 card to Black Water because we haven't been there and have wanted to try it, this will get us to go and it will be close to free.

There are a few ways to get gift cards at below cost. First you can always check eBay, however there are even less expensive venues out there. My friend Bernie found a site I hadn't seen before that I am very excited to order from its called Plastic Jungle and they ship for free! If you have ever used it yourself I would love to hear about it. There is also the Gift Card Rescue, where you can sell, exchange or buy discounted cards, they also have free shipping. Also, if you live near a Costco they sell gift cards for all sorts of places at below face value. (Super saver tip: If you can get a discount Costco gift card and use it to purchase discounted gift cards to other stores you can save up to 60%!)

Finally, if your looking for a great way to present your gift instead of just popping it in an envelope then check out the Gift Card Girlfriend for a ton of wonderful and creative ideas!

Hope you are all having a wonderful week!

Saving dough…

Its that time of year again, time to get out the mixing bowls and baking sheets and start on our holiday cookies. Whether your in a cookie exchange or just making goodies for your family you can always find a way to make your dough go further.

Nestle has a holiday recipe guide available for free while supplies last at their web site, as well as free e-cards.

A few Christmas’ ago….OK so maybe its more like 10.…my neices made something they called puppy chow and brought it to a potluck at my sister-in-laws. Sure looked like dog food but it tasted wonderful and its so easy to make and share.

Chex Puppy Chow:

9 cups Chex cereal, (any kind works)
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Put the semisweet chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter into a 1 quart microwavable safe bowl. Microwave uncovered on high for 1 minute. Stir until everything is melted. If stirring doesn't melt everything, place in the microwave on high for 15-30 seconds. Be sure to stir until it's well mixed and smooth. After it's well mixed, add vanilla. Pour Chex cereal into a large bowl. Pour the chocolate, peanut butter, and butter mixture over the Chex cereal. Use a spatula and mix until all the Chex are covered in the mixture. Toss like a salad to coat entirely. Pour the powdered sugar into a large zip lock bag (2 gallon). Add the Chex. Shake until all the Chex are well coated. While all the Chex are in the bag, clean out the original bowl so no chocolate residue is left inside. Dry the bowl. Add mixture from bag and place into the bowl. If the Chex are not fully coated with powdered sugar, add more powdered sugar to bowl and cover with cling wrap. Shake until well coated. To make for gifts put the mix in glass jars with festive labels.

Coupons for this recipe:
$1.00 off 2 boxes of Chex at the Betty Crocker web site.
Nestle Toll House chocolate chip coupon at the Nestle web site.

Not the baking type? Not a problem! King Arthur Flour has great mixes available, they even have a mix for dog biscuits so you can be Fido’s hero too! They currently have a great deal going, 15% off when you buy 5 mixes, no coupon code needed. These mixes also make great gifts for someone who loves to bake but has limited time.

Don’t even want to bother with mixes? That’s not a problem either. Pillsbury has coupons for their pre-made cookies, just heat and eat. The best part is you can decorate them any way you want and make them look homemade.

Remember, the cost of homemade is a lot less than store bought, on the average a dozen sugar cookies cost you only .95 cents when made at home, that same dozen jumps to $1.45 per dozen if you use a pre-made refrigerated dough and jumps again to a whopping $4.25 per dozen from a bakery.

If your planning on doing your baking over the weekend be sure to check your local grocers ads for savings on the things you will need. You can check out the Sunday paper inserts early at SundaySaver.com.

Hope everyone is having a great week so far!

Its in the cards....Part three

Yesterday I had some problems with the blogger program dropping some of my loyalty programs links so I have included them in today's information. I am also posting the information about discount programs that offer savings up front but often are not free to join. Its important with discount cards that charge fees to know if your going to use it enough to make back the fee over the course time until the next fee is due. Barns and Noble for example charges a $25 annual fee, for me this is not a problem, I can usually make up the $25 in under 2 months, but if your not an avid reader this program would not work.

Priority Club which has Holiday Inn Hotels and a few others like the Indigo Hotels which I am looking forward to trying sometime when I can't find a Kimpton Hotel where I am staying.

MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas

Every major US airline has a reward program and it can be hard to sort through all the information to find the one that's best for you, especially since they all partner with different hotel chains, car rentals and some even with cruise lines and department stores. There is a web site dedicated to helping you find the one that is right for you, its called Frequentflier.com

Discount Cards:

Barns and Noble again, there is a $25 annual fee for the card so make sure you can save at least that much per year. The discount card also works in the coffee shop section so be sure to use it for any snacks as well.

F.Y.E. you can only join at the brick and mortar store but you can use the discounts on line, there is a $25 per year fee.

PetCo is free to sign up.

PetSmart is also free to join.

Starbucks Coffee, they have several levels to their program, each offering different discounts. The cards are free at the base level but there is also a Gold level which has a $10 fee for the year.

Sears offers a program for all their Craftsmen products.

GNC Nutrition stores, there is a $15 fee for this card and it is very limited in its use.

There are quite a few different grocery stores that offer discounts, in the Midwest where I live there are only has a handful that offer any type of frequent buyer program, but if you have one near you its worth checking out, they are all free to join to the best of my knowledge.

This will be the last blog until after Thanksgiving to give me time to prepare the feast. I am going to try to make as much from scratch as possible, frozen fruit salad, cream of carrot soup, zucchini bread, pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce all from scratch, hopefully the house will still be standing when I am done.

Hope you all have a fun and safe Thanksgiving, and for those of you heading out for Black Friday I wish you all the best.

Its in the cards....Part two

As I promised yesterday, today is the continuation of reward cards because the list was rather long.

There are some considerations with all reward cards:

* Is it free? Although most are free, some rewards programs charge membership fees to enter. If you're considering one with a fee, make sure you've weighed its benefits carefully and will be able to get out of it what you paid to be a member.

* How easy is it to earn points? Earning points shouldn’t be complicated. Find out how much you need to spend in order to earn a point. The easier it is to earn, the faster you get your reward.

* Do the points take to expire? In some programs, the points you earn will expire after a certain date. Before you sign up, find out how long points take to expire. If you have a few sites that have expiration dates it’s a good idea to put a reminder in a calendar so you won’t forfeit them.

* What can I earn with my points? It’s important that the type of rewards you can redeem with your points are of value to you, if you get a free steak but are a vegetarian then that’s not going to be of value to you. Personally I don’t fly so the rewards for miles don’t interest me, however a lot of the miles can be converted to other items, be sure to check if you can interchange things you don’t want for things you do want.

* How do I track my points? Your points should be easy to track either online or by phone.

I hope that these will help you on your quest for the perfect holiday gift this season!

Its in the cards…..

I was going to post about Black Friday, but because Black Friday is as exciting to me as the Black Plague was in the middle ages I will post something that can maybe make those sales and the rest of the season a little bit sweeter.

I can’t begin to count the number of times I have been waiting in a check out line with my loyalty card in hand waiting my turn when I have heard the cashier say to the person in front of me “Are you a member of our rewards program? Its free to join if you would like.” and the customer says “no thank you“. Now I think to myself; why the heck wouldn’t you sign up? If you got a free candy bar of your choice with purchase, no strings attached you would take it, even if you didn’t want it for yourself you know someone you could give it to, so why would you not join a loyalty program that offers cash back or free merchandise? I have seen folks at Best Buy checking out with a large screen HD TV and DVR, spending thousands of dollars turn down the card and I just cringe, they assume its nothing big, but in fact they just told Best Buy “Thanks, but we are happy spending tons in your store and really don’t want $200 back in store cash.” Look at it this way folks, even if you never set foot in the store again its only a minute or two to give your name and address, so why not sign up, your spending the money in their store anyway, let them reward you for doing it. Here is a list of the companies I know of that have loyalty programs that are not attached to a credit card in the stores name, most of them are free to join unless I have stated otherwise. You may be surprised at just how many companies have loyalty programs, everything from your local coffee house punch card to your investment company, if you know of something that’s not on the list please post it in the comment section for everyone.

Here is a list of the Stores that offer programs, tomorrow I will list entertainment, dining, grocery and travel.

Nordstrom

JC Penny; This one is a little different and follows what you purchase on credit cards registered under the program, still very easy but you will need to use the cards you register to receive points.

Big Lots

Kmart

Shopko

Hallmark Gold Crown Card

Borders Books

DSW Shoes

Famous Footwear

Nine West

Finish Line

Best Buy

Sephora

Ultra (Program Varies by State)

Gymboree

American Eagle

Eddie Bauer

Tired of carrying around all the rewards cards? Guess what...there's an app for that! If you have an iTouch, iPhone, Blackberry or other smart phone you can download Card Star and it will store all your card info and it can be scanned at which ever store your in.

Hope this list get you thinking before you head out on Friday, I will get the rest of the list and more pointers out tomorrow for you.

Have a wonderful day!
