Wednesday's learn and earn...

~WORD OF THE DAY~

tranche \TRAHNSH\  ~  noun

DEFINITION: a division or portion of a pool or whole

EXAMPLES: "The funds are doled out in tranches over time…." — From an article in The Economist, March 10, 2012

"The 1917 law … allowed $8 billion in national debt, the first tranche of an ultimate $30 billion debt to fund World War I, repayable in gold." — From an article by David Malpass in Forbes, February 27, 2012

DID YOU KNOW? In French, "tranche" means "slice." Cutting deeper into the word's etymology, we find the Old French word "trancer," meaning "to cut." The word emerged in the English language in the late 19th century to describe financial appropriations. Today, it is often used specifically of an issue of bonds that is differentiated from other issues by such factors as maturity or rate of return. Another use of the French word "tranche" is in the French phrase "une tranche de vie," meaning "a cross section of life." That phrase was coined by the dramatist Jean Jullien (1854-1919), who advocated naturalism in the theater.

Friday's Freebie...

This Sunday, 3/3/12, you can get a free quart of Clark+Kensington paint at Ace Hardware, just print out the coupon and bring it in with you.  You will want to get there early, each store has about 40 quarts of paint to give out and when they're gone they're gone.  Depending on the shade of paint a quart will cover between 100 and 200 square feet, this would make it a great way to paint some trim in a room, do an accent wall or get busy with some fun wood craft projects.

Have a great day!

Wednesday's learn and earn...

~WORD OF THE DAY~

meshuggener  \muh-SHUG-uhner\ ~ noun

DEFINITION: a foolish or crazy person

EXAMPLES: Alex wondered what kind of meshuggener would be foolish enough to buy bonds from a known scam artist.

"'Take no notice,' she said…. 'The man's a meshuggener.'" -- From Howard Jacobson's 2010 novel The Finkler Question

DID YOU KNOW? From "bagel" and "chutzpah" to "shtick" and "yenta," Yiddish has given English many a colorful term over the years. "Meshuggener" is another example of what happens when English interprets that rich Jewish language. "Meshuggener" comes from the Yiddish "meshugener," which in turn derives from "meshuge," an adjective that is synonymous with "crazy" or "foolish." English speakers have used the adjective form, "meshuga" or "meshugge," to mean "foolish" since the late 1800s; we've dubbed foolish folk "meshuggeners" since at least 1900.

~THE REBATE~

Spring is a great time to check the air filter in your furnace.  Right now 3M is offering a couple of rebates on their replacement filters.  The first one is $3.00 back for purchasing a single Filtrete High Performance Air Filter with a 1500 Microparticle Performance Rating (MPR) or greater, the other rebate is $6.00 back when you purchase three Filtrete Air Filters with a 1000 Microparticle Performance Rating (MPR) or greater.  Both rebates require the purchase be made before June 30, 2011.

Remember to sign up for the swap as well, so far we have three folks signed up.  The swap is simple, think about where you live and with a budget of at least $10 purchase something that represents where you are, package it up with a postcard from your city or state and mail it off to a person the pair you up with.

Hope you are all having a great week!

Wednesday's learn and earn...

~WORD OF THE DAY~

legerity  \luh-JAIR-uh-tee\ ~ noun

DEFINITION: alert facile quickness of mind or body

EXAMPLES: With legerity, the prefect noted that the man had just divulged information about the murder that had not been made public, and which placed him at the scene of the crime.

"I think, the results will not take long to appear, taking into account the legerity acquired by our leading bankers in recent years." -- From a blog entry on 24dash.com, January 30, 2011

DID YOU KNOW? When "legerity" first appeared in English in 1561, it drew significantly upon the concept of being "light on one's feet," and appropriately so. It is derived from words in Middle and Old French and ultimately Latin that all mean "light in weight." These days, "legerity" can describe a nimbleness of mind as well as of the feet. A cousin of "legerity" in English is "legerdemain," meaning "sleight of hand" or "a display of skill or adroitness." "Legerdemain" comes from the French phrase "leger de main," meaning "light of hand."

~THE REBATE~

Don't sell your equity...

Are you thinking about buying a house this year?  Looking to sell the one you live in?  Here are some facts you should know in this market that will affect the price you ask for your home.  Everyone knows that curb appeal matters, but how much exactly?  Simple things like cleaning and decluttering your yard can have as much as a 500% return, simply put, invest $50 in a rake, bags and a trash can and you can increase your sale by as much as $2500, that's an amazing return on your money and not much is earning that in this economy.  A little landscaping can go a long way too, a few flowers or even using seeds which cost even less can greatly increase your curb appeal and increase your value across the board.

Other, more involved, home improvements include upgrading your front door and/or garage door(s).  According to Realtor Mag if you upgrade your front door to a great looking steal door that is finished on both sides you can get a return of 102.1%, in their example the door cost was $1,218 making the resale value $1,243.  The other project, replacing your garage door doesn't come out with more earnings, but it does keep people looking at your house.  According to the Magazine, if you "remove and dispose of the existing 16-by-7-foot garage door and tracks. Install a new 4-section garage door on new galvanized steel tracks; reuse the existing motorized opener" you can expect to recoup 83.9%, in their example they used a garage door costing $1,291 making the sale value of that project $1,083.  I is disheartening to see that your are not going to get back 100% of your investment but if you look at the amount of people it can potentially draw in to look at your house which can help sell faster, then its surely worth the investment.

Looking for ideas for the interior?  Try moving your furniture to make the room flow better and remove clutter, this allows potential buyers to visualize their things in the space.  A great example is our own home, we have a small area off the kitchen that I put sofas in because we entertain upstairs in our living room, people kept coming through our open houses saying we had no dining room, they couldn't picture putting a table where the sofas were so we had to put our kitchen table there.  I don't think its that people can't think for themselves, its just that a lot of folks look at four or five houses in a day, and only after they have narrowed down their search on the Internet, which brings up the next point.  Make sure your MLS listing pictures are fantastic!  Consider it Internet curb appeal and if your pictures are small, blurry or too dark people will just move on, you also don't want just one picture of the house and 15 of your property, they can see the property when they get there, on the Internet they are looking for a home.  Another interior project that won't break the bank but will add to your house appeal is painting.  Just by painting the walls you can add instant freshness to your home, its like a house face-lift and can take years off how old your home looks.  If you have any sort of odor problems from pets or smokers in the house take a look at the new Dutch Boy Refresh Paint, its designed with Arm and Hammer to absorb odor, plus, if you sign up to be a preferred customer Dutch Boy will send you coupons towards your purchase.

Have you bought or sold a house recently?  I wold love to hear what odd things you may have seen along the way.  During our buying and selling process we have had quite some interesting things that's for sure, like the one that prompts this tip; if you have a house showing to a potential buyer, take your undergarments off the cloths line in the bathroom, we don't need to see if your bra and panties match.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Wednesday's learn and earn,...

~WORD OF THE DAY~

callithump • \KAL-uh-thump\ • noun
: a noisy boisterous band or parade

Example Sentence: Energized with cookies, cake, ice cream, fruit punch, and other sugary treats, the children erupted into a callithump, blowing noisemakers and banging pails.
Did you know? "Callithump" and the related adjective "callithumpian" are Americanisms, but their roots stretch back to England. In the 19th century, the noun "callithumpian" was used in the U.S. of boisterous roisterers who had their own makeshift New Year's parade. Their band instruments consisted of crude noisemakers such as pots, tin horns, and cowbells. The antecedent of "callithumpians" is an 18th-century British dialect term for another noisy group, the "Gallithumpians," who made a rumpus on election days in southern England. Today, the words "callithump" and "callithumpian" see occasional use, especially in the names of specific bands and parades. The callithumpian bands and parades of today are more organized than those of the past, but they retain an association with noise and boisterous fun.
