Wednesday's learn and earn...
Sorry I missed the last couple of days, I had one last procedure I had to go through for my breast cancer treatment. Because the Dr.s found out I am Factor 5 positive (a fancy way to say I get blood clots pretty easy), I am unable to take the medication that would stop estrogen from being produced so in stead I had my ovaries removed and that should do the trick. It kept me down for a couple of days, but I am doing much better now, so on with the show...
~WORD OF THE DAY~
recalcitrant \rih-KAL-suh-trunt\ ~ adjective
DEFINITION(s): 1: obstinately defiant of authority or restraint
EXAMPLES: Anna's doctor ordered a week of complete bed rest, but, ever recalcitrant when it comes to doctors' orders, she was up and baking a cake after two days.
"Finally, he laid down the parental law: You will go on a hike and, gosh darn it, you will enjoy yourself. So the recalcitrant 14-year-old shrugged into her sweat shirt, slipped into her flimsy … canvas sneakers (totally hiking-inappropriate) and slumped in the back seat for the drive southwest to Vacaville, Calif., and Lagoon Valley Regional Park." — From an article by Sam McManis in Tri-City Herald (Washington), June 30, 2011
DID YOU KNOW? Long before any human was dubbed "recalcitrant" in English (that first occurred, as best we know, in one of William Thackeray's works in 1843), there were stubborn mules (and horses) kicking back their heels. The ancient Romans noted as much (Pliny the Elder among them), and they had a word for it — "recalcitrare," which literally means "to kick back." (Its root "calc-," meaning "heel," is also the root of "calcaneus," the large bone of the heel in humans.) Certainly Roman citizens in Pliny's time were sometimes willful and hardheaded — as attested by various Latin words meaning "stubborn" — but it wasn’t until later that writers of Late Latin applied "recalcitrare" and its derivative adjective to humans who were stubborn as mules.

Sunday's media madness...
I love finding new TV shows on DVD, but the price has to be right. Lately I have been seeing commercials for a show called Justified that I think looks really good and I wanted to give season one a try. I checked out all my online sources and found it for only $19.00 at Amazon, plus if you are a prime member you will get it shipped in 2 days for free. If you are already a fan of the show and know its something you would like to own yourself, season two is also available for $19.00 from Amazon.
Here is a synopsis of the show from Amazon: "Justified is the story of Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), a true-blue hero and something of a throwback, given to wearing a Stetson and cowboy boots, carrying his sidearm in a hip holster – a weapon he only draws when he has to, and when he does, he shoots to kill, because, as he sees it, that’s the purpose of a gun. The character of Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens was created by America’s pre-eminent crime novelist Elmore Leonard (Get Shorty, Out of Sight) and is played by Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood, Live Free or Die Hard). The Chief Deputy of the Lexington USMS office is Art Mullen, played by Nick Searcy (Cast Away, From the Earth to the Moon). Working alongside Raylan are fellow deputies Tim Gutterson – played by Jacob Pitts (The Pacific) – and Rachel Brooks – played by Erica Tazel (Life, The Office). Raylan, Art and the other deputies do what all U.S. Marshals do – chase down fugitives, protect witnesses, transport prisoners."

Dr. Dolittle from 1998 is only $4.99, regularly $14.99. "Workaholic physician Eddie Murphy turns from two-legged to four-legged patients after an accident restores his childhood ability to communicate with animals. The always classic Caddyshack is $7.49, marked down from $14.99. "Riotous comedy set in an elite country club features Rodney Dangerfield as a loud & loutish new member, Chevy Chase as the egotistical club pro, Bill Murray as a crazed groundskeeper, and the pesky Mr. Gopher. The plot revolves around a not-so friendly game of golf between Dangerfield, Chase and stuffy judge Ted Knight."
A great comedy that's still relevant today, Trading Places is also $7.49, marked down from its original price of $14.99. "Conniving street bum Eddie Murphy and snobby, rich executive Dan Aykroyd wind up switching lives because of a "heredity vs. environment" bet between corporate bigwig brothers Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche, and hilarious shenanigans are bound to erupt."

"Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy star in writer/director John Hughes' acclaimed teen drama about five high school students from different social, economic, and academic backgrounds who spend a Saturday detention together and learn that they have more in common than any of them ever thought possible."
And finally a great all around feel good movie Moonstruck, now marked down to $8.99 from its original price of $14.99. Sunday's media madness...
I am so excited. Bones Season six will hit the shelves Tuesday October 11th, this is one of my favorite shows so I am looking forward to snuggling up with my blanket and hot chocolate to solving some great mysteries. I don't think I would ever spring the extra money for TV shows on Blu-Ray so I keep the price lower by only shopping for the standard DVD format. With that in mind I was able to find the lowest price for the DVD with DeepDiscount for $35.99 with free shipping.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the show, Bones is the story of forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan, who works with FBI Agent Seeley Booth to help the Bureau solve crimes and identifying human remains. The shows character of Temperance Brennan is based on Kathy Reichs who is a best selling author as well as a practicing forensic anthropologist. As smart as Temperance Brennan seems in the series, I think she would be a close second to the real Dr. Reichs. If you are interested in Kathy Reichs books or background you can find it all at her website, as well as additional information on the show.
Hope you are having a beautiful weekend!

Wednesday's learn and earn...
~WORD OF THE DAY~
moiety \MOY-uh-tee\ ~ noun
DEFINITION(s): 1a: one of two equal parts : half 1b: one of two approximately equal parts
2: one of the portions into which something is divided : component, part
3: one of two basic complementary tribal subdivisions
EXAMPLES: "According to the FDA, a new molecular entity or new chemical entity is a drug that contains no active moiety that has been approved by the FDA for any other application submitted under section 505(b) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act." -- From Ibis Sanchez-Serrano's 2011 book The World's Health Care Crisis: From the Laboratory Bench to the Patient's Bedside
"She was asked to describe the tribe's two moieties. She said the Winter and Summer People provided the basic religious and social structure…." -- From Joanne Barker's 2011 book Native Acts: Law, Recognition, and Cultural Authenticity
DID YOU KNOW? "Moiety" is one of thousands of words that English speakers borrowed from French. The Anglo-French "moitè" (meaning "a half" or "part of something") comes from Late Latin "medietat-," meaning "half." Around the same time that "moiety" was borrowed from Anglo-French, "medietat-" was also borrowed directly from Latin as "mediety," a word which can also mean "a half." "Medietat-" comes from Latin "medius" (meaning "middle"), which has contributed to such English words as "medium," "meridian," and "milieu."

Sunday's media madness...
As many of you know I really enjoy watching TV on DVD, I love being able to put the shows in the order I enjoy watching, being able to pause them or skip over an episode if I have seen it. I know I could watch many of them on line but they usually don't have a whole season and I have problems with pausing on the computer, many times I come back and my computer has gone into sleep mode and the video wants to start over. Don't get me wrong, its great if I miss an episode of Top Chef or Project Runway, but for a full season of fun I need my DVDs. Recently I had a few shows come out close together and found something I had never watched. I had a great coupon from Best Buy so I picked up the first season of a show called The Glades. It airs on A & E on Sundays at 10/9 central. It is the story of detective Jim Longworth, from Chicago, who moves to Florida after his boss shoots him in the rump. He is a little crass, a little self centered, a little full of himself and has a wry sense of humor. He is also hopelessly in love. Unfortunately the woman he loves is currently married to an inmate of the Florida Correctional Facility making things a little more complicated. This show fits all my credentials for great TV, the characters are fun and a little bit quirky and the dynamics are perfect. If you are interested on finding the first season on DVD be sure to check the going rate on eBay or Sell.com. For a new copy the lowest price I found was at DeepDiscount for $26.65 with free shipping on your order.
I hope you are all having a terrific long weekend! Remember to check out the Saturday Sojourn swap we have going on right now, it should be a lot of fun!

Sunday's media madness...
I didn't get to see many children's movies as a kid and as a result I love watching them as an adult. My latest joy came from the age old romance story told by Shakespeare so many years ago and re-told now by Disney; Gnomeo & Juliet. This story is great for both adults and kids, as adults we all know the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet, but as seen through the eyes of Disney and Elton John this story takes on a new life. Amazon says: "Lured out of their respective gardens by wanderlust and an exotic orchid, Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt) meet and instantly fall in love. Their forbidden love blossoms with a little help from a plastic pink flamingo named Featherstone (Jim Cummings), and soon life-threatening lawnmower races ensue, an epic battle is staged, and wisteria trees and gnome hats are hacked to bits in the process. Shakespeare himself (Patrick Stewart) makes an appearance and declares that, while this story bears a marked resemblance to one of his own, he's not sure it will end in quite the same way." Some of the other great voice over talent includes Michael Kane, Dolly Parton, Hulk Hogan, Jason Statham, Ozzy Osbourne and Dame Maggie Smith. Despite the fact that this story has been told thousand of times in as many different ways over the centuries this was a fun way to spend a little bit of time and get lost in an animated backyard. I found a new copy of the DVD at Amazon for $15.99 with free shipping if you are a Prime member or place an order over $25.00. The 3D version is available at Glyde for $21.00 plus $4.09 for shipping and handling and the Blu-Ray version is on sale at Amazon for $19.99 again, with free shipping for Prim members or orders over $25.00.
I hope you all have a great Fathers day.

Sunday's media madness...
I love finding new TV shows on DVD to watch when it rains, much like my plan for today as a matter of fact. With that in mind I thought I would share one of the new shows I purchased recently and am really enjoying so far. I picked up Covert Affairs staring Piper Perabo and Christopher Gorahm. The series is based around a young woman, Annie Walker (Piper Perabo) being trained at the CIA farm who is called into active duity early due to her language skills. Once at the CIA she meets Auggie Anderson (Christopher Gorahm) who, although blind is the beaurus best electronics expert. The series starts out action packed, with Annie shot at her first day on the job, something, her supervisor tells her, most agents go a whole career without having happen. The action dosen't slow down for the whole of the first season and is sure to keep you wanting more. If you arn't sure you want to own it you can ceck out the USA Network's web site and watch an episode or two. The series starts in the middle online but you can get a feel for the show. I was able to find the Season One DVD for the lowet price at Amazon
for $34.99 with free shipping, it is not available on Blu-ray currently.
I hope you are all having a great weekend.

Sunday's media madness...
So whats the weather like where you are? Is it cloudy, do you have rain, or are your skies filled with sunshine? It doesn't matter which, you can find a movie for any weather...
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: This 2009 computer animated family film that tells the story of the town of Swallow Falls, located on a tiny island hidden under the “A” in "Atlantic" on the world map. After the demand for sardines plummets the town suffers an economic depression. Now stuck with their supply, sardines became the sole food in Swallow Falls. When the young local genius Flint Lockwood discovers a way to change the molecular structure of water to food. But something goes wrong and the machine ends up in the atmosphere. Later it starts raining food. And so the shifty mayor tries to use this as a way to help their community. But when Flint sense somethings wrong with the machine, the mayor convinces him to ignore it. But as Flint predict chaos ensues. I was able to find a new copy of the DVD at Deep Discount for $12.14 with free shipping, for the Blu-ray version I found it for $26.49 at Amazon
.
Black Rain: This 1989 action film stars Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia as two New York police officers who arrest a member of the Yakuza, the Japanese Mafia, for murder and have to transport him back to Japan where he escapes. As they try to track him down, they get deeper and deeper into the Japanese Mafia scene and they have to learn that they can only win by playing the game the Japanese way. This movie is being discontinued on DVD by the manufacturer, but you can still purchase it for $10.87 with free shipping from Smartzplace. The Blu-ray version was the lowest price at Buy.com for $13.29 with free shipping.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: This Romantic fantasy, released in 2006 stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as two people who supposedly meet on a train. As the story unfolds we learn that the two have actually been together before but after a bad break up they both had their memories of their past relationship professionally erased. The story is told mostly through memories as the couple finds each other again. I was able to find a new copy on DVD for $9.70 at Red Tag with free shipping. The lowest Blu-Ray price was at Movie Mars for $12.41 with free shipping.
Hope you are all enjoying your weekend, no matter what the weather is like where you are.

Wednesday's learn and earn...
~WORD OF THE DAY~
galley-west \gal-ee-WEST\ ~ adverb
DEFINITION: into destruction or confusion
EXAMPLES: A rogue wave knocked the anchored boats galley-west.
"'Get the door, Scott.' 'Daddy, what if he's … there?' 'Then I'll knock him galley-west with this thing.'" -- From Stephen King's 2006 novel Lisey's Story
DID YOU KNOW? American author Mark Twain is on record as one of the first to use "galley-west" in his writing. Etymologists believe the word is a corruption of dialectal English "colleywest" or "collyweston." The earliest appearance of those words, used with the meaning "askew or awry," dates from the late 16th century. The ultimate source of "colleywest" and "collyweston" is not known but is suspected to be from a personal name. When "galley-west" is used in speech or writing, the verb "knock" usually precedes it.
