~WORD OF THE DAY~

supposititious \suh-pah-zuh-TISH-us\ ~ adjective

DEFINITION(s): 1a : fraudulently substituted : spurious b : of a child (1) : falsely presented as a genuine heir

(2) : illegitimate 2a : imaginary b : of the nature of or based on a supposition : hypothetical

EXAMPLES: "I sat looking at Peggotty for some time, in a reverie on this supposititious case: whether, if she were employed to lose me like the boy in the fairy tale, I should be able to track my way home again by the buttons she would shed." -- From Charles Dickens' 1850 novel David Copperfield

"If I had Clark for a son, I would probably take my supposititious heir to lunch myself." -- From Tim Sandlin's 2010 novel Social Blunders

DID YOU KNOW? The Latin verb "supponere," meaning "substitute," has several legitimate heirs in English, including "supposititious" (which dates from the early 17th century) and "supposition" (a 15th century addition). The "fraudulent" and "illegitimate" meanings of "supposititious" trace back to "supponere" in a fairly direct route, whereas the "imaginary" and "hypothetical" meanings were influenced by the meanings of "supposition." In legal contexts, "supposititious" is primarily used in its earlier senses, as in "a supposititious (fraudulent) will" or "the child was supposititious (illegitimate)." When something hypothetical is being considered, the adjective "suppositious" is often preferred over "supposititious."

Tastefully Tueday...

I love fall and September marks the start of cooler air dipping down from Canada and making our nights crisp.  It also marks the beginning of the end of the growing season, but there are some great foods to work with in the Fall that are at their peak, sweet potatoes, cranberries and pears are just a few, but the are the few that come together in this wonderful recipe from Bon Appetite from back in 2002 when I had a subscription, I looked it up on line and was able to find it at Epicurious.  This is a great combination of flavors, enjoy!

Baked Sweet Potatoes Stuffed with Cranberries, Pears, and Pecans
8 8-ounce red-skinned sweet potatoes (yams), scrubbed
1 cup dried cranberries
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
2 large firm but ripe pears, peeled, cored, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
1 cup pecans, coarsely chopped
4 teaspoons minced peeled fresh ginger
4 teaspoons (packed) golden brown sugar
2 teaspoons plus 1 1/2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt

Position rack in center of oven and preheat to 350°F. Line baking sheet with foil. Pierce potatoes in several places with fork; place on prepared baking sheet. Bake until potatoes are tender when pierced with fork, about 55 minutes. Cool slightly.

Meanwhile, place cranberries in small bowl; pour enough hot water over to cover. Let stand 5 minutes to soften. Drain well. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add pears and sauté until tender and golden, about 4 minutes. Stir in cranberries, pecans, ginger, and brown sugar; sauté 1 minute. Mix in 2 teaspoons vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

Cut off top 1/4 of each potato lengthwise; discard tops. Using fork, gently mash pulp inside each potato. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Melt remaining 2 tablespoons butter in small saucepan over low heat. Whisk in remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons vinegar. Drizzle about 1 teaspoon butter-vinegar mixture into each potato; mix with fork to blend.

Mound cranberry mixture in sweet potatoes. (Can be prepared 4 hours ahead. Cover loosely with plastic wrap; let stand at room temperature. Rewarm sweet potatoes uncovered in 350°F oven until heated through, about 20 minutes.)

Today's no cook offer is from Little Cesar's, get a Crazy Bread with Crazy Sauce for only $1.99 carryout with their printable coupon.  Offer expires September 30, 2011 and is available at participating locations.

I hope you are all enjoying a great Tuesday!

Wednesday's learn and earn...

~WORD OF THE DAY~

dreadnought \DRED-nawt\  ~  noun

DEFINITION: 1: a warm garment of thick cloth; also : the cloth
2: battleship
3: one that is among the largest or most powerful of its kind

EXAMPLES: "In 1941, the German battleship Bismarck sank the British dreadnought HMS Hood in the North Atlantic, killing all but three of the 1,418 men on board." -- From a "This Day in History" article by the Associated Press, May 24, 2011

"But a plain old Pontiac Bonneville, dating from the mid-'60s, is more impressive for its latent historical integrity…. In my neighborhood, this dreadnought from the V-8 era of pre-EPA profligacy has been haunting the curb for months." -- From an article by Brian Miller in the Seattle Weekly, March 23, 2011

DID YOU KNOW? "Fear nothing" -- that is essentially what "dread" plus "nought" means. The name might seem a strange one for a garment, but if you consider that dreadnoughts were worn onboard ships, you can appreciate the colorful name perhaps as much as the seafaring men must have appreciated the thick protection dreadnoughts offered from the elements. The clothes and the cloth, first called "fearnought" in the late 18th century, came long before the battleship. Not until 1906 did the British Navy launch HMS Dreadnought, the first battleship to have a main armament consisting entirely of big guns all of the same caliber. All ships of this type were then called "dreadnoughts." That particular type of battleship soon became obsolete, but their legacy lives on in the extended third sense of "dreadnought."

Sunday's media madness...

Recently I have added some new apps to my iPad so it is ready to take on vacation.  Surprisingly my favorite way to pass time now is playing UNO.  Gameloft has a great app for only .99 cents and it allows you to play against another person or play the AI in a single game or in tournament mode.  In the tournament mode there are a variety of rules to play through and win, standard rules, penalty rules where you can play a draw 2 on a draw 2 and so on until the last player standing has to pick up a bunch of cards, the 7-0 rules which require you to change hands with a player of your choice when you play a 7 and all cards go one person left or right, depending on the direction of play, when a 0 is played, and jump in rules which is just that, when you have the same card, both color and number as the card played you can jump in and play it.  All these variations make the game a ton of fun and can be hugely entertaining for kids or adults.  You can find the game on iTunes or at the Gameloft site.

The other app I found came to me in an email from Conde Nast Traveler Magazine, I currently subscribe to and love their magazine, now it is available to me on my iPad for free as part of that subscription.  You will need to enter your magazine subscription number which should be on your mailing label.  Some subscribers are having issues logging in, I had no problem however.  I was more than willing to download this app and wait for the fix if I needed to, its one of the magazines I look forward to being delivered!

Hope you are all having a great weekend!

Wednesday's learn and earn...

~WORD OF THE DAY~

flivver  \FLIV-er\  ~  noun

DEFINITION: a small cheap usually old automobile

EXAMPLES: Kevin plans to keep his new convertible off the roads during the harsh, cold months when streets are salted and sanded, so he is looking for a flivver to use as a winter beater.

"She shook my hand -- a man's strong grip -- and then drove away in her flivver." -- From a story by Stephen King in his 2010 book Full Dark, No Stars

DID YOU KNOW? In 1908, Henry Ford changed the world with the Model T, the first affordable automobile. English speakers quickly coined an array of colorful terms for the Model T and the other relatively inexpensive cars that followed it. No one is sure why cheap cars came to be called "flivvers," but we do know that in the early 1900s that colorful term was also used as a slang verb meaning "to fail," as in "If this film flivvers, I'll be in trouble." In Flappers 2 Rappers: American Youth Slang, author Tom Dalzell lists "flivver" (which made its print debut in 1910, just two years after the Model T hit the streets) among a number of terms applied to "the humble Ford." Others included "bone crusher," "bouncing Betty," "Henry's go-cart," "puddle jumper," "Spirit of Detroit," and "Tin Lizzie."

Tastefully Tueday...

Last Fall I had a chance to try Plantains for the first time at a local Caribbean Restaurant and it was love at first bite.  I was intrigued and wanted to be able to make them at home, but with no experience I was worried it would be hard, but as it turns out, the hardest thing is to find the Plantains here in Norther Minnesota.  As luck would have it my local Co-Op has them so when we stopped in yesterday I grabbed on to have with our pork chops tonight.

Puerto Rican Tostones (Fried Plantains)

5 tablespoons oil for frying
1 plantains, peeled and broken into chunks
3 cups cold water
salt to taste

Heat the oil in a large skillet. Place the plantains in the oil and fry on both sides; approximately 3 1/2 minutes per side.  Remove the plantains from the pan and flatten the plantains by placing a plate over the fried plantains and pressing down. Dip the plantains in water, then return them to the hot oil and fry 1 minute on each side. Salt to taste and serve immediately.

***The riper the plantain the quicker it will cook, so a yellow or brown speckled one will cook a lot faster than a green one.  Also the riper the plantain the sweeter it will be.

Today's no cook option is from Buca Di Beppo, just bring in your printed coupon for $10.00 off any order of $20.00 or more.  This coupon is good until September 4, 2011 and excludes group menus, Alcohol, Tax and Gratuities and purchase of gift cards.

I hope you are all having a great week so far!

Sunday's media madness...

You may have seen the movie trailer recently for The Help staring Emma Stone.  The movie is based on the best selling book of the same name by Kathryn Stockett.  I love reading the story before seeing the movie, usually the move doesn't do the book justice and so much seems to get left out.

The Help is a story base in fact and takes place in the 60s in Mississippi.  A writer gets an assignment to write some stories told from the point of the help, the black maids who help raise the white children but are not allowed the same privileges, such as using the bathrooms in the homes, as the people living in the houses.  Eventually she puts the stories together in the form of a book that becomes the center of attention and debate in the south.  I like the poignancy of the book, I was born in the early 60s and its still hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that this has only changed in my lifetime.  I am so glad we have come so far, but it took so long.  This book is a must read for me and I think it would be an eye opener for some of the younger folks who don't know how hard life was and how much things have changed.  The book is also a look at enjoying life, no matter what your circumstance and it is sprinkled with humor and love.  I hope everyone gets a chance to read it before they see the movie version.  I was able to find the book in paper back for the lowest price at The Book Depository for $8.49 with no shipping fees, you can download the Kindle printed version of the book for $9.99 from Amazon, or you can download the unabridged audio version from Audible.com for $26.60 and they will give you two free movie tickets from Fandango so you can see the move on them.

Hope you are all having a great weekend.
