Happy New Year!!

2012 was a very different year for me, one filled with everything from fear and doubt to joy and peace.  Looking back though I would have to say it was mostly a fun year.  Having something like cancer enter you life really reminds you how precious time with friends and loved ones is; and with that reminder I strengthened friendships with the people already in my life, rekindled friendships from my past and met some new great people who I now consider friends as well.  I took time and every opportunity to do things, both for the sheer joy of it as well as to spend time with the people who mean so much to me.  I hope 2013 will be a year filled with more joy and less fear, more smiles and laughs and less tears, and I hope your new year will be everything you hope and more.

I have made two New Years resolutions, one to just be more active, that in turn will help my over all health, the other is to go back to blogging.  I will be posting at least 3 times a week again baring any unforeseen issues and I look forward to reconnecting with my blogging community.

Peace and Joy for your New Year,
Michele

Make a Friend Monday...

Welcome to the Make a Friend Monday blog hop, I hope everyone had a great weekend! Monday is usually a day filled with things that are not much fun, so why not take a short break and get to know a new blogger?

The rules are simple, stop by the featured bloggers site and say hi, the check out as many of the other blogs as you like, let them know you found them here. Just grab the hop button for your blog or post from the bottom of this post or the sidebar. Link up and have fun meeting new folks.

MAKE A FRIEND MONDAY

It’s Just Life
Today I would like to introduce you to Beth Ann Brown Chiles from It's Just Life.  I met her not too long ago through another blogger and I have enjoyed reading her blog very much.  One of the bonuses to reading her is that she does Comments for a Cause, which means she donates money to charity for each real comment left on her posts. What that means for you is you get a great read and if you leave a nice comment you are in part helping a worthwhile cause.  The charities change every month, this month the money raised goes to The Crisis Intervention Services in Mason City, Iowa.  Personally I can tell you that when you read her blog you are getting a glimpse into her life, one that makes you feel like you have known her since childhood, its warm, heartwarming, fun and, well...It's Just Life!
Tell us a little about yourself and your blog or blogsI have one blog called It's Just Life--Finding the Extraordinary in the Ordinary. I originally started my blog in 2008 when we were contemplating a move to Australia for a job change for the hubby. It was a great way to keep the family and friends back home up to date with what was going on with us and share a little bit of the things that we were seeing. Then I got hooked. I have always loved to write and even if my audience is small I really love to read comments on my posts. My blog is about my life, travels, family, and anything else that happens my way. I do a Teapot Tuesday post weekly where I feature one of my teapots from my massive collection! I also do a Comments for A Cause where for every legitimate (and we all know about those spammy ones!) comment that is made I donate 50 cents to a charity. The charities are all different and it has been a great way to meet people associated with those charities!

What do you consider your greatest personal achievement?  Without a doubt it is raising our two sons! I always wanted to be a Mommy and was blessed to be able to do that twice!!! I was doubly blessed that I was able to be a stay at home mom for most of their years at home. I would not change a thing. They have grown up to be amazing and wonderful young men who have made their parents proud. I could not think of a greater thing than to be able to say that I had a part in that.

Where is your favorite place to hang out on the Internet?  That is a good question!!! I find myself on Pinterest and Etsy an awful lot these days.....

If you could meet one person dead or alive, who would that be?  I think it would have to be Mother Teresa. What a life she led and what I could learn from her!!! I think it would be amazing to be able to sit down with her for just an hour and hold her hands as she told me about her life.

If you could have any job you wanted, what would it be? Maybe a chocolate taster????? Sounds good about now!

Favorite movie or TV show? Hands down favorite television show of all time is Friday Night Lights. It was a real show with real characters . And Tim Riggins wasn't too hard on the eyes after all.

Sunday's media madness...

Yesterday morning I was doing my blog and posting on the hops when I found a spotlighted blogger that just blew me away!  Her name is Olivia and she is an Army wife living on base at the Schofield Army Barracks, Hawaii and my oh my this girl can sing!  I know I usually do a write up about thing you can get your hands on but this was so good I couldn't wait until her EP comes out later this year.  I think my favorite song is Drive These Blues Away, but they are all great.  She is 100% self taught which just adds to how impressive her music is!  You can follow her blog and/or her music at ReverbNation, you can also check out her YouTube videos.  Be sure to follow her on Facebook or Twitter to find out the release date of her EP.

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend.

Meet me on Monday...

I was honored to receive an award from Caren over at Cat Chat with Caren and Cody the other day!  I figured that since one of the requirements of the award was to tell 7 unknown facts about me that you may or may not know that would qualify as a "Meet Me on Monday" post.

Thank you again Caren and Cody!!  Here are the 7 facts:

1) I was quite shy as a child and forced myself into situations when I got older to over come it, including taking a public speaking class in high school.  Now a lot of my friends will agree that I never shut up.

2) I adore traveling, it is fun to go back to places I love and to learn about places I have never been.

3) I have a Welsh Corgi named Tucker and a striped cat who is officially named Mrs. Murphy.  They are named after the Corgi and the cat in a series of mystery books by Rita Mae Brown and her writing companion Sneekie Pie.

4) My family tree includes a famous outlaw family on my dads side (the James' and the Youngers), a Canadian boxing champion (my dad's dad) a professional football player (my dad) one of the first State Troopers for Minnesota (my mom's dad) and a beauty queen (my mom).

5) When I was younger I went to Arizona with my folks and found a rock I cleaned up while we were there,  by the time I got home I had a weird burning rash between my fingers.  The Dr. realized the rock I had was radioactive and I had gotten burns from it, he made me give up the waaaaaay cool rock.  Now days I try to keep X-rays to a minimum. ;-)

6) I tend to be a person who is "in for a penny in for a pound", when a friend finally got me to "try" scrapbooking I bought everything I may ever need and filled an entire closet in less than a week, with blogging I went from writing once or twice a week to every day in a mater of a couple weeks.  I tend to jump into the deep end when I do stuff, thankfully it usually works out fine.

7) I have very eclectic taste, so much so that my husband had to have a separate iPod, he couldn't stand listening to something from a classical piece to rap or hip hop, then to country, then Irish folk, then something by Ozzie or Marilyn Manson, it drives him nuts.  (My reading is the same way, mystery, biography, history, vampire fiction, travel, romance on occasion, suspense and some horror)

Now, I am supposed to give this award to 15 bloggers who I think are "Irresistibly Sweet":

10 Steps to Finding Your Happy Place (and Staying There)
Cat's Thoughts
Colie's Kitchen
Doodle Dollies
High Heeled Life
Inside of a Dog
Luxury Living Frugal Style
Marsha's Spot
Mika's Pantry
Mystery Lovers Kitchen
Never Growing Old
One Mixed Bag
Sew How's This
Simply Beautiful Veg.
Sky! My Camera

I wanted to also give the award to Tourist Cup but he already received it. But I wanted to include his blog because the pictures are so beautiful.

Have a great week everyone!

Meet me on Monday...

Monday again and time for the one thing I think we all look forward to at the start of every week.... Meet Me On Monday hosted by Java over at Never Growing Old.

Today's Questions:

1. What is your favorite bagel flavor?
2. If you had an extra $100 right now, what would you spend it on?
3. What is the last thing that you felt guilt about doing?
4. Soft serve ice cream or hand dipped?
5. Are you allergic to anything?

---------------------------------------------------------------
1. What is your favorite bagel flavor?

Folks who know me with just nod and smile, but its Garden Vegetable.  Its my favorite because I can have it by itself, as a sandwich or open faced with cream cheese and Lox, its great either way.

2. If you had an extra $100 right now, what would you spend it on?

I would get my dog Tucker a new dog bed with sides, he ripped his old one and now he keeps trying to sleep in the cat beds with sides to feel secure.

3. What is the last thing that you felt guilt about doing?

Spending so much on craft supplies at Michael's.  I did get some AWESOME paper for scrapping but even with my coupon I was over budget.

4. Soft serve ice cream or hand dipped?

Yes please.  I love any kind of ice cream, my favorite is blueberry or strawberry cheese cake and that I have only ever seen in hand dipped, but I love the smooth creamy texture of soft serve.

5. Are you allergic to anything?

A medicine the Dr.s prescribed for my Triglycerides gave me blood clots in my legs, so yup, I have one allergy.

Hope you all have a wonderful week ahead.

Meet Me On Monday...

Monday again and time for the Meet Me On Monday hop hosted by Java over at Never Growing Old.  This is one of the things I think most of us bloggers look forward to on Mondays.  Hope you all have a great week, here are today's questions:

1. Crunchy or smooth peanut butter?
2. What is your favorite color Rose?
3. Do you remove your shoes when you walk into your home?
4. What is your favorite season?
5. Approximately how many hours a day do you spend blogging?

-------------------------------
1. Crunchy or smooth peanut butter?

I don't care for nuts in things so I love smooth peanut butter, even better is smooth honey roasted peanut butter!
2. What is your favorite color Rose?

I would say two toned pale yellow and a touch of pink since my favorite Rose is a Peace rose (I prefer the vintage varieties to the new brighter hybrids).  The rose was named because when it was invented in France in the late 30s the inventor, Francis Meilland knew war was coming and sent cuttings of his rose to his friends in the US, Turkey and Germany to keep the rose safe.  It's believed that the cutting sent to the US was on the last plane that went out before the German invasion.  After the war the French Viscount Alan Brooke was asked by Meilland if he could name the rose after him since he was so integral in ending the war.  Brooke declined saying a more suiting name would be "Peace".  Per Wikipedia: "The adoption of the trade name "Peace" was publicly announced in the United States on 29 April 1945 by the introducers, Messrs Conard Pyle Co.. This was the very day that Berlin fell, officially considered the end of the Second World War in Europe. Later that year Peace roses were given to each of the delegations at the inaugural meeting of the United Nations in San Francisco, each with a note which read: "We hope the 'Peace' rose will influence men’s thoughts for everlasting world peace".

3. Do you remove your shoes when you walk into your home?

I don't think I have ever worn shoes in my house, not even as a little kid.  Its more comfy in socks or bare feet, plus its really hard on the floors to wear shoes inside so nope, we take them off.

4. What is your favorite season?

I would have to say Spring, I love watching everything come to life again and plant all my flowers and vegetables.

5. Approximately how many hours a day do you spend blogging?

That's a tough question, if you are talking about just getting mine out it can take anywhere from a half an hour to 4 hours depending on what I am doing.  Friday and Monday are the easier ones taking about 1/2 hour, Saturday's Sojourn takes about 4 hours, sometimes more.  If you are including reading as well then I can sit up in my office for a whole day sometimes, it depends on what I am supposed to be doing that day.

Hope you are all having a great day, I am looking forward to seeing everyone's answers. :)  Be sure to enter the giveaway for the free pizza and cutting board, it ends Tuesday and has REALLY low entries.

Tastefully Tuesday...

I know, its Tastefully Tuesday, but I have something fun to share, which after yesterday will make me smile.  Don't worry, nothing tragic yesterday, just a good reminder lesson in manners.  In a nutshell, if you call on Friday to make an appointment to look at a house on Monday afternoon, don't put an offer in on a DIFFERENT house on Saturday then call on the said Monday to cancel the showing.  We spent all weekend cleaning instead of having a nice Easter. I wasn't in a really great mood yesterday, but on the bright side we have a nice clean house where you can eat off the floors if you want.

So here is the part to share, Bernie over at One Mixed Bag and I were chatting one night about awards and how fun they are to get but that they are a bit of work and we giggled that it would be fun to get one that required the recipient do nothing in particular, totally their choice, then it hit us, well gosh, why can't we make that happen?  So here is it folks, the No Hoops Award.  We are giving it to the blogs we read a lot, and in my case some I read but don't comment on a lot because I have been so busy.  When you get your award you MUST do what ever you feel like, you could sing a little diddy, whistle a little tune, dance the happy dance or nothing at all, its your choice.  You can pass it along or just post it on your blog, or you can ignore it, anything goes.

So here are the blogs I would like to give this award to, in no particular order (OK you caught me, they are alphabetical), and if your new here today feel free to grab the award and pass it on to someone or just keep it for yourself.

A Long Way From Texas (She makes me want to move to Ireland... most days)
10 Steps to Finding Your Happy Place (and staying there) (I do try but some days its hard, she helps)
Bags Books and Bon Jovi (Even the name is great)
Cat Chat (I know she is an award free blog space but I wanted her to know I was thinking of her and Cody)
Cat Thoughts (Who's reading is making me sooooo jelous!)
Dogs, Cats and Other Crap I Talk About (One of the best advocates I know for animal rights)
Egg and Twig (Who is causing me to drool almost everyday I read her posts!)
Facing 50 with Humor (I am right on her heels!)
Housecat Confidential (Fin is a great author, and I can't wait for the next book!)
Its a Keeper (Another blog trying to keep my weight up, they even weed out the bad recipes!)
Kat Happy Haven (Because she works harder than anyone I know to take care of injured critters)
Life with Dogs (Who doesn't need a little unconditional love?)
Meet Virgina Designs (Fashionista extraordinaire and fun to read!)
Never Growing Old (Best blog hop host-er ever!)
Photographing New Zealand (I love seeing places I have never been in beautiful pictures)
Shibley Smiles (Great coupons and blog hops!)
Simply Beautiful Veg. (I love reading the adventures of College life and a new appartment from such a nice lady)
The Thrift Shop Romantic (She makes me want to go looking for treasure!)

Have a great Tuesday everyone!!!

Tastefully Tuesday...

Last week I posted a slow cook version of a barbecue beef sandwich and didn't give it much thought. That is until Alexis over at Simply Beautiful Veg. said she would make them if she ate meat it made me stop and realize that I haven't posted a single thing for the vegetarians out there.  I have vegetarians in my family but I am always at a loss as to what to make when they visit so we usually go out to eat and leave the cooking to someone who can make something amazing.  But I really did want to post something fun that everyone could enjoy so I asked Alexis for one of her favorites, and I gotta tell you it looks amazing!  Now I won't be at a loss as to what to make next time I entertain for my nieces and nephews that don't eat meat.

Please be sure to check out Alexis' blog today too, she is just getting started and I love reading her posts, always something fun, its like chatting and catching up with an old friend.

Palouse Burgers
Written by Caitlin Cole

1 cup dry lentils, well rinsed
2-1/2 cups water
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 medium onion, diced
1 medium carrot, grated
2 teaspoons dried herb of choice
1 teaspoon soy sauce or liquid aminos, optional
3/4 cup rolled oats, finely ground (a clean coffee grinder or food processor works wonderfully)
3/4 cup bread crumbs

Place the lentils, water, and salt in saucepan, bring to a boil, lower heat, cover, and simmer for about 45 minutes, until water is nearly gone and lentils are very soft, with splitting skins. Sauté the onion and carrot in oil until soft, about 5 minutes. Mix the lentils, onions, carrots, pepper, herb, and optional soy sauce in the large bowl, then mix in the ground oats and bread crumbs.

While still warm, form the lentil mixture into patties. To cook, heat a bit of oil in a frying pan, place a burger on top, and fry until brown, 1-2 minutes. Repeat on other side and serve.

Tastefully Tuesday...

Since Bernie has her blog up and running and looking beautiful, we decided that I would do something fun and different on Tuesdays.  I used to do a Monday meal deal, which was the hardest post to write, so I took a break, started doing the Meet me on Monday's with Java from Never Growing Old, and let Bernie fill in for me on Tuesdays.  Since I so enjoy the Monday blog hop I decided to keep that and move the foodie piece to today's spot.  Bernie will still be filling in for me when I am on vacations or sick or just plain lazy so have no fear and please be sure to check out her hysterical blog over at One Mixed Bag and follow her on Google Friend Connect, Twitter or via e-mail.

This weekend I had my friend Jen over to visit and scrapbook.  I kept promising her I would have Puppy Chow for the (no, not the actual dog food.....although in hind sight that would have been funny to watch).  Well, life being what it is, things kept getting in the way of our play date and twice it got postponed and of course twice her portion of the Puppy Chow got eaten by my husband and me.  This time I decided we better make it while she was actually standing in my kitchen to ensure she got her fair share and it didn't get attached to MY hips, its good to share ya know.  Well to make this magic happen I actually needed a couple of things from the store, more Chex cereal and some peanut butter, so I thought I would make Jen stop and get them.  I was super impressed she didn't whine, she really hates grocery shopping so I thought that may induce more trauma then when she had her kidney transplant a few years back, bit nope, she was just that happy to finally get some Puppy Chow at last.  So what is this infamous Puppy Chow?  Well you may know it better as Muddy Buddies because for some reason Chex didn't think it was appropriate to put the words Puppy Chow on their box, I'm not sure if its the implication that their food is somehow meant for dogs or the copyright infringement, maybe both, but here is the recipe for you folks to try:

Chex Puppy Chow snack mix

9 cups Chex
*you can use any kind of combination of Chex, Rice, Corn, Honey Nut, Chocolate, etc.
1 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Put the cereal in a large bowl and set aside.  In a microwave safe bowl put chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter.  Microwave on high for 1 minute then stir together, the chips will appear to not melt but they do.  If you need a little bit more time microwave for no more that 15 seconds.  After those are mixed together add n the vanilla.

Pour the chocolate mixture over the Chex cereal and stir together with a large wooden spoon to coat all the pieces.  Put the coated cereal into a large plastic bag with the powdered sugar and shake well to coat.

Place the mixture in air tight containers and allow it to cool.

Here are some coupons for this recipe:

$1.00 off when you buy any 2 boxes of General Mills cereals listed: Basic 4® • Cheerios® (any) • Chex® (any) • Cinnamon Toast Crunch
$1.00 off any 2 Nestle Toll House Morsels

Don't feel like cooking? No problem, Join iHop today, March 1st for National Pancake day: "Join IHOP on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m., for National Pancake Day and receive one complimentary short stack!* In return for the free flapjacks, we ask you to consider leaving a little something behind for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals and other designated local charities. Thanks to our guests' generosity, IHOP raised more than $2.1 million last year. IHOP began its National Pancake Day in 2006, and since then, has raised $5.35 million for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals and other local charities and given away more than 10.1 million buttermilk pancakes."

Have a great Tuesday everyone!

Meet me on Monday...

Every Monday Java over at Never Growing Old hosts a Meet me on Monday blog hop that is always fun and helps to introduce new folks. Hop on over and check it out!!

Today's Questions:

1. What do you put on your hot dog?
2. Do you play Sudoku?
3. What is your favorite vegetable?
4. Do you color your hair?
5. What is your favorite brand of clothing?

-----------------------------------------------------

1. What do you put on your hot dog?

Ever since I have been little I have looked at hot dogs as the base for wonderful things.  Depending on my mood I love Sauerkraut, pickles, cheese, mustard, mayo, onions, chili almost anything goes with the exception of Catsup, I don't really care for the red stuff.

2. Do you play Sudoku?

Nope, a Sudoku puzzle would take too much time out of my month.

3. What is your favorite vegetable?

Just one?!?!  I have a vegetable garden and just discovered that Artichokes love my soil and will grow in our norther climate so they are what I have been craving for the last month or so, as a stand by probably Spinach or Broccoli.

4. Do you color your hair?

I thought only my hair dresser was supposed to know!  ;)  I do color it because I don't like the mix of my natural color and grey.

5. What is your favorite brand of clothing?

Oh an easy one, I love everything from Coldwater Creek, I just found some amazing deals on their on line clearance last week.

Have a lovely Monday everyone!

Sunday's media madness...

Last week during a blog hop I stumbled across a book that caught my eye and has since captured my heart.  Its called Housecat Confidential and is the autobiography of Fin, a beautiful long hair house cat, told in her own words and transcribed by the author Meg S. Hart.  The story opens with a wonderful look at her kitten-hood in the shelter and dealing with being different from the other kittens in her litter.  Her interactions with her litter-mates are heart warming and funny and certainly a reminder that beauty is something best seen through the heart, not the eyes.  The book covers everything you would want to know about being a cat or as Fin calls it "a Kittizen".

If you ever wondered what your cat is trying to tell you with that slightly different meow?  Its covered. Want to know what your cat is thinking when it just stands there looking at you with "that" look?  Its covered.  Want to know how your cat REALLY feels about being "fixed"?  Its covered.  This book goes through all the joys of being a companion to a cat, everything from snuggle time, to vet visits to grooming.  Having three cats myself I relished the insights on mousey love and the evil Dyson, it was also nice to finally find out why my three cats all turned out to be "Daddies" girls.

If you have a cat or are thinking of getting a cat I highly recommend this book, it will make you smile, chuckle and nod in agreement....a LOT.  The pictures of Fin are adorable and thankfully one of the first ones, a kitten picture says you can go ahead and smooch the page if you need to....I needed to.

You can find this book at Amazon in paperback for $9.95 or Kindle download for $3.99.

Here is the Amazon Product Description: "Have you ever wondered what “Meow” really means? What would a cat say about her life, or about her observations of yours?

Maybe our lives aren’t so different.

Fin’s life is filled with many of the same struggles and joys we can all relate to. Her love of and frustration with her family, finding love despite the scandal (with her toy mouse), discovering her life’s purpose (humans don’t wake themselves), and protecting the ones she loves from danger (moths and the new family dog).

After reading this humorous and heartwarming tale, filled with advice on living life on the inside, you may never think of “Pet Peeves” in the same way again.

About the Author: Fin is an ordinary suburban housecat living life on the inside."

Fin and her mom also have a blog by the same name, Housecat Confidential, so you can keep up with her and her family, you can follow on line or have it delivered from Amazon straight to your kindle for $0.99 so you never miss a post.

I hope you are all having a great weekend.

I won an award....

Last night while going through my blog comments I found that one of my readers, Helen, aka Rumtruffle (don't you just love that name!) over at A Crafty Kind of Truffle picked me as one of her choices to win the 'Stylish Blog' award!  If you get a chance please go and check out her blog, it is so full of great crafts and today she has up some really cute pictures that started my day off with a good chuckle.  Thanks again Helen, I am glad you enjoy my blog!!

There are 4 duties to perform to receive this award:

1. Thank and link back to the person who awarded you this award
2. Share 7 things about yourself
3. Award 15 recently discovered great bloggers
4. Contact these bloggers and tell them about the award!

OK, 7 things about me that you don't know:

1)  I am eclectic in everything, food, music, TV, movies, reading, travel, you name it.  I am a true believer in "variety is the spice of life".

2)  I Love photography and will find ANY excuse to take a picture, I also love to see others creative photography.

3)  I am a stay at home mom of three cats and a dog.  The dog we drove down to southern Wisconsin for, the three cats all arrived via the cat stork right to my back door.  Just call me the crazy cat lady.

4)  I am related to Frank and Jesse James on my dad's side of the family, my dad was their 2nd cousin and when I am really cranky I blame it on the "outlaw gene".

5)  I am not afraid of spiders, snakes, bats, rats or mice.  I love every critter, no matter how "creepy" people think they are.

6)  I got an iPad for Christmas and love it, I am looking forward to taking it on vacation instead of lugging the laptop around.

7)  I am, on rare occasions, a mystery shopper and its really fun to get paid to go eat or watch a move or go shopping.

I would like to pass this award onto the following:
